Adding POI files to VW RNS 510 Nav unit

Does anyone know why the nav unit does not recognize a SD card? In Setup-Media everything but MDI is greyed out. I can stick a SD card into the slot to try and add some waypoints of my own in *.db3 format and it says loading the file. But it really does not. The unit will play CD/DVD's but that is also greyed out in the actual Setup-Media settings.
I've tried every setting there is and no luck. I've even reloaded the newest firmware and that makes no difference either.

Sorry but I did not know in which thread to post this so I picked this one.

Maybe looking at videos will give a clue

Maybe watching videos like this one can give you a clue. He is showing custom settings for the pois.

I also read this

"I have a Skoda Octavia that uses the VW group RNS510 infotainment system (known as Columbus in the Skodas).

The newer beta firmware are supposed to offer the ability to import custom POIs via a DB3 database on an SD card however whilst the import works fine the POIs are not displayed. This appears to be an issue with the 3xxx series firmware as technically they are still beta.

With the 2xxx firmware you cannot import a DB3 file off an SD card, however you can create a custom navigation DVD.

I used the fixed camera and school zone POI files in gpx format to create my custom nav disk and updated my maps on the RNS510 HDD. Whilst there is currently no audible alert function for these POIs at least they show up on the maps which is great. "

POI's

Thanks for the reply
The video clip actually is an advertisement for some Australian company selling custom POI's for Australia and unfortunately does not help. There are hundreds of YouTube clips out there but none of the ones I found even remotely addresses my problem. As I mentioned everything but MDI is greyed out and I do not even have the MDI cable, never mind even have one plugged in.

My firmware is 5382 which is the latest as are my maps 10M.

The strange thing is that about 2 weeks ago I was able to load POI's from a SD card in the file.db3 format and they did show in "My waypoints", but that is greyed out since I can not install new POI's.

Since the unit will play DVD's and CD's I wonder if I could install POI's via a CD?

I had a suggestion to set the SD card up just the same as for a Garmin i.e Garmin\POI\file.db3

I'll try that next.

Try different folder arrangements

Just wondering -

For the CD or DVD, try different folder arrangements:

.db3 file without a folder, or a folder with .db3 inside

I don't know if two subfolders would work.

Or, the same idea for the SD card!

What folder arrangement?

What folder arrangement worked for the SD card last time?

POI limit?

Perhaps you have already reached the limit on the number of POIs? How do we know what the limit is?

Limit

The total limit is 20 individual POI categories's, not individual POI's. There are a number of built in POI categories.
All the ones I had originally managed to install have all disappeared. Maybe I have to break down and go to the dealer if they have a solution.

Nothing like this out on the internet, I've searched. Done a Navigation reset, a media reset and a complete factory reset already.

Since you say you have a TDI, the software in the RNS was recalled as part of the settlement.

My next move

I think the dealer will be my next move. You might think Canada would be covered with that recall as well.

Though before I run off to the dealer I'll do a complete factory reset with the engine off and the KESSY key nowhere near.

Installing new maps and firmware is done that way.

Follow up !

I do not give up very easy. After a trip to the dealer without any betterment, I started to dig around some more.

I found a program which is to let someone add a map to a Nav unit. In the "Help" file there I found my answer.
This is the program:
http://christian-jeanin.ro/mapstool2.php

It is/was as simple as creating a folder on the SD card and name it "PersonalPOI". Then copy the waypointfile ***.DB3 into that folder. Stick it into the Nav unit and in "Setup" select import.

Similar to setting up a Garmin SD card.

Well I'm a happy camper now '-)

Dealers Don't Understand

Dealers usually contract out to a specialist repair company for any audio stuff, due to the complexity of the audio/entertainment/nav systems.

It's likely even the specialists don't appreciate the benefits of downloading Custom POI's.

Good work for digging this up.

Still Confused

OK so I've found a couple of POI files (csv format) on this site that interest me. They are formatted, Longitude,Latitude, text, Location Name.

It appears to import these to the VW RNS510 Nav unit the files have to be converted to db3 format? How do I do that? Nothing seems to be working anylonger.

Thanks

POI

The only program I know of that lets you convert to DB3 files is " POIinspectOr". But to make any use of it you have to buy it!

As far as I am concerned, my Garmin GPS is far easier to work with. And I very rarely use the RNS510 in my car.
The RNS510 screen makes a wonderful albeit expensive back-up camera!

I did find this site

I did find this site (https://www.gps-data-team.com/convert.php) to convert the csv file format to db3. Still no joy as the RNS510 didn't even see the extension. It seems to be asking for Vcards.

I feel like the South end of a horse facing North.

Thanks for the reply.
