How do you cure a boot loop?

My poor old Garmin nuvi 500 is stuck in a boot loop. I haven't tried yet to plug it in to see if I can get to the file system via the back door. Any hints? Booting while holding down the lower left and/or right corner didn't do squat.

Thanks in advance.

My 765 was boot looping

My 765 was boot looping until I put it on a wall charger and let it charge up. It would not charge when connected to computer as it kept rebooting. Works fine now.

Same on a Nuvicam.

My Nuvicam had been sitting unused for quite a while. Tried to update the maps and just got that behavior. Had to charge it some with an official (expensive) Garmin USB charger.

Motorola charger

I use an old Motorola charger for my 775. Works like a charm, and actually boots into maps as a bonus!

Strange

It seems the battery won't hold a charge, or maybe it just won't charge until the nuvi O/S boots up. Either way, once I unplug the power cord, the thing goes dark immediately. I left it boot looping for over 24 hours, yet the battery is still dead. Oh well, guess it's time for another unit...

Battery Replacement

As you probably know, the Nuvi 500 is one of the few Garmin units with an easily replaceable “snap in” battery. Replacement batteries are available, such as this one on eBay, for around $15.

It is possible that your looping issue is caused by something other than the battery however. Spending $15 on a vintage GPS is something of a risk. I suppose it depends on how well you like your old unit.

I’ve replaced the battery in my old 265 twice now. Probably a waste of money but I like the simple basic features of the old gal and keep her around as a spare.

I wonder if this

is a 3-digit garmin issue, as it would happen all the time with the 660. The 2350LMT only got stuck once, but it did not loop upon losing power, then restarting.

This should all be a thing of the past now that google maps is free.

Fortunately

I bought my 500 upon the recommendation of a good friend of mine. He has the same exact unit, so I can probably borrow his for a spell to swap out the batteries and see what the deal is. Will keep you posted.

(Yes, I like the unit!)

Boot Loop

I had the same problem with my 755. Replacing the battery solved the problem.

Thanks

Got mortar? I have a brick...

I finally got to borrow my buddy's nuvi 500. I swapped out the batteries to find out that mine is fine. It did have a charge, and fired his unit up right away. Using his battery in my questionable unit shows the same symptoms... I'm the proud owner of a brick.

Is A Boot Loop Like

Fruit Loops?

Hickups?

Maybe it just needs a good washing?

Have you tried giving it a bath?

Bath sounds good

The nuvi 500 is waterproof. (It has a boating mode!)

Always looking for a good reason to upgrade...

May have to

I really liked that my 500 had boating, walking, driving and biking modes. Sharcnet (after waiting a couple weeks for their shop to not be so busy) basically gave me the palm and said my unit wasn't listed in their serviceable units web page, so they won't help me. That's a shame, because my buddy sent a nuvi in years ago (I believe it was that unit, though it may have been another model), and he swore by their service. Oh well. Any service shop recommendations?
