Does anyone know how to remove Garmin Express from the Windows 7 tray? I don't need the "Start GE when device connected" function.

You can select whether to run Express if a device is connected or run in the background or neither.

Thanks for the information. I really believe the Garmin tech should have passed that helpful bit of information on to me when he/she replied to my e-mail.

While I normally update when I see a new version, I'm glad to say I did NOT update GE. So I still have v.4.1.19.0

BTW: I tried the link posted earlier for older versions and it does not come up for me. Anyone else have the same problem?

This is odd. I have the latest GE version installed and decided to try it to update my nuvi 3597 and computer with the new today 2017.20 map update. The options of 'update computer' and update device and computer' both were offered and I chose the device and computer. This is contrary to what's being reported in this thread. My download is underway. I'll report back if my map update worked for both the nuvi and the computer. If I did update the computer with 2017.20 with the new GE, then things are going to be even more confused.

I did check first and found that there was no newer version of GE that came out today with the new map update. If GE 4.1.21.0 really can't update the computer, then I had really expected there to be a new GE without the version *21* bug prior to seeing the new map update being offered.

But I think it works if you haven't downloaded the map. It's if you download it and then try to download to your PC.

Ah, thanks. That may be it. As already reported on the map update thread, the latest GE will successfully update device and computer for us folks who are doing the map update to both and who don't have that map already installed to one.

Since my earlier posting I have installed 2017.20 on my 2797 successfully.
Then I prepared my SD clone for the 855. Before doing that I installed GE v.4.21.1 and it does give me the option to install to
Device only
Computer only
Device and computer

That is AFTER the 2797 download where I had opted for Device and Computer

A new bug keeps stating that there's an update even after applying it when GE is restarted.

Thanks for the heads up. If there is an issue, I wonder why Garmin doesn't pull it until they fix the bug.

to D/L to Base Camp after I updated the 1st Unit, which I did, I also still have the D/L available to BC even after the 4 Unit I updated and I also have the latest version of GE........................

Has anyone updated the new map to "computer only" using GE? This is the way I've done it for quite a while. Then use mapinstall to put new map on my 2 SD cards (I've got 2 Zumo 550's).

Did it that way on my laptop having installed map first to desktop. No issues.

I installed the new map today and had on options to install to computer at all. After the install to my GPS, I looked again to see if there was an option for computer, and there was not. I then closed Garmin Express and removed my old map 2017.10 from my computer. When I started Garmin Express again, there were options for device, device and computer, and computer only.

The install to computer only took less time than to device by about half (10 mins vs 20 mins).

All is fine now. If you are having a problem, I hope this helps.

For the older GPS devices without Junction View, Voice Recognition, etc., this may be worth looking at.

But for the newer devices with these bonus features, the technique will place the map on the device but without these features and I expect most folks would be unhappy with the results.

For those with the current Garmin Express with this problem, there's another solution other than uninstalling the current GE and installing an older version. I just tried it and it works fine while leaving the current Garmin Express in place.

Many of us keep a copy on our computers so we wouldn't even have to download it. GarminMapUpdater, upon seeing the current map version on your nuvi, asks if you want to reinstall the map with different options. Say yes to this and you'll be offered the Install to Computer option.

Thanks. In settings I couldn't find a way to prevent GE from starting with Windows (maybe I overlooked that) but I solved this by removing the GE startup entry from the registry.

It's in Settings and then in the GENERAL section.
