Load Map Updates On SD card

I need a step by step procedure describing how to load map updates to an SD card on my LMT 3490. The device is full when I attempt to update I get the message to use an SD card. The question is how? Garmin express finds the device +SD card but I have a choice of Device, Device and computer, and computer. The first two options are out so I am left with computer but where am I going to install it on my computer? How is installing on my computer going to result in the maps appearing on the SD card. I can’t seem to download the maps to Base Camp either, it simply shows the global map. Would appreciate it if someone could provide this newbie with a step by step solution to my issue.
Thanks

There should be a option alerting you to load maps to SD card See https://goo.gl/vJlrf . See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=reaNehy6Iv0 for a little more info.

rhanson,

Do you have an understanding of why your nuvi 3490 has insufficient space for a map update? The nuvi 34xx series is reported to have about 7GB of storage and this should be sufficient for a map update to the nuvi itself without a SD card. Have you installed other maps: City Navigator Europe, topo maps, etc? Have you ever installed a map to the 3490 with MapInstall (rather than Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater)? When you go to myMaps in the 3490, what maps are being offered and which are checked?

Although you could update the map to the SD card, it might be better in the long run to find out what's using your nuvi internal storage.

Not that complicated

@rhanson1936

If you choose your device then Express, if it needs to use the SD card, will use it. You don't have to somehow 'select it'.

As for BaseCamp, either chose the install to computer option (before or after updating your device) or choose Install to device and computer. Personally I prefer to do one then the other. Having done so you'll be able to select the map in the Maps toolbar in BaseCamp.

Check PC space?

Be aware that if you don't have enough PC disk space for a download AND decompression (roughly 2x the map download gb) for install/build you may get errors like this. I ran into similar sounding problems using a tablet/laptop that was close to full on it's SD memory/storage card space. Garmin Express install error messages kept leading me to think it was a device space issue rather than a PC storage space issue. Normally during a map install I'd get a message that I didn't have enough device space, and then an option to install to the device's sd card.

There are a few threads here that discuss removing the previous GE install files to recover space if that turns out to be your problem.

True

Express requirements are for up to 13Gb free space on your hard drive ...

SD Card

The problem I have been having is that GE will not allow me to load my Europe maps directly to the SD card. I have NA on my nuvii. What it makes me do is to download it to the computer then I have to install it from there to the SD card.

updating an added map.

@ChefDon16 ... it does seem like Garmin could make this easier for users instead of requiring the two step process for updating an added or supplemental map. But I think it is unlikely that Garmin will ever make this improvement in Garmin Express. They don't even offer a lifetime update option for an added map any more.

Garmin has never allowed updating of the SD card or download versions of their added maps, but it used to be you could buy an additional map (like CN Europe for a NA device) on DVD, then make a second purchase of the lifetime map subscription. Now Garmin no longer sells the DVD map version, so there is no way to to add the lifetime subscription (unless you already own the DVD or can find an old one in stock at an online store).

So if you already own the DVD and lifetime update for your Europe map, consider yourself lucky.

Ah ...

Now we can see the issue, you're talking about installing a supplemental map smile

In that case yes, you need to install it first to your PC then use MapInstall to install the map to the card. If you don't have MapInstall on your PC then you can get it by installing BaseCamp onto your PC.

Transfer to SD card

Once BaseCamp shows the map to install it to the card connect your nuvi and right click the User data folder on the card in the left hand pane. Select Install maps and follow the wizard.

Thanks

Thanks alanb and sussamb for the info. I did buy the Europe DVD then the lifetime updates. I have been doing the 2 step updates (first to PC then to nuvii SD) for all of the Europe updates for some time now. I initially was using MapUpdater and thought that GE would solve the problem....which it did not. Thanks again! smile

PS....the process does not delete the old version which I end up deleting manually sad

Well it will ...

But you need to set MapInstall to do so. Personally I find it easier to do it manually, as you did.

Paranoia

I guess my paranoia was kicking in, thinking that I was missing something. I also have city maps of several European cities.........but they are really old and outdated. Don't know why I am keeping them.

Still confusing .. Seems Garmin EXPRESS - ISN'T

Perhaps changing the basic startup script to announce:

'Program needs 10gb of SYSTEM disk space: you have xxx FREE'

Then,

G'E detects an SD card - do you want to install/move/create files there?

How can we help ? Check one box below for assistance on:'

THEN, list actions to choose from.

IF they made it SIMPLE for users I think they have a chance in car market, if not, with all the built in NAV systems they might just lose that market entirely after a few once trade-ins/ resales fill used car market.

Can I assume

That you would download to the PC first?

I'll have to try the split download next time to see if that might be faster.

map update drive 50

I received the dreaded micro SD card alert when I tried to update my Drive 50. I tried to update it thru my computers sd card port and was unsuccessful.

I installed the Micro SD card into my Drive 50 AND THE UPDATE WENT AHEAD AS DESIRED

Card needs to be between 4GB and 32GB, I used a 32GB micro SD card
