garmin update

After downloading the latest map update, my GPS sometimes tell me completely wrong directions.

Master reset

If at any time your GPS doesn't do what you expect after a map or software update the first thing to try is a master reset.

LMT

I decided to update my map yesterday, and it nearly hosed up my laptop (this is why I do not use my "main" laptop, I use an old one to do the update)--I see nothing has changed with Garmin Express.

As far as the wrong directions, well, common sense....it often says to go one route to a destination, and yet another route back--this has never made sense to me.

But to be fair, it works 80%+ of the time. If we want total accuracy then we'd have to use Waze or something.

How wrong?

How are the directions wrong? Wrong destination or wrong chosen route? If the route, have you checked that the GPS is still set to automobile*, and that the routing is still set to fastest*?

*Or whichever is your preference.

And check what avoidances are checked/unchecked.

I don't know the details,

I don't know the details, but my sister never updates her maps anymore. It seems every time she ends up returning her GPS to COSTCO.

She Definitely Needs some Troubleshooting

HowardZ,

Sounds like your sister may have something wrong with her GE install or her hardware. If you get a chance, you may want to take her through the steps of updating so that you can troubleshoot her install. Garmin has automated this process so much that it is sounding as if there is something else not working correctly that is causing this problem. My fear is that this problem will proliferate into other software/hardware of your sister's system and cause even more serious problems.

Garmin Nuvi 2699 with 2017.30 Maps

garmin express no longer a problem

Garmin Express has been rock solid for more than six months. At one time there was update after update with bug fixes causing new problems. But now, that is over!

When a map update fails, look elsewhere. Advice usually ignored:

restart the computer

restart the nuvi - not just sleep

update Windows including NET Framework

if the computer has other issues such as device manager with yellow exclamation points, fix it or get Geek Squad

dobs108 smile

I have not seen any issues

I have not seen any issues with Garmin Express on my laptop so far either.

Same here with GE

For a couple of GE updates about a year ago, I had problems with Garmin Express failing to update to a newer version due to some sort of Proxy issue even though no proxy was being used.

If one has problem with Garmin Express they should uninstall it then download the latest version only from the Garmin website and reinstall it.

Worked for years

I've used it for a few years now with great success. As others have posted if anyone is having issues look elsewhere as it won't be Express at fault.

haha 6 months, eh? My 2350LMT is like 10X older than that.

Restart the Nuvi, and restart the computer, these are typical suggestions when the root cause isn't known. Does that work? Many times. But it's not indicative of "rock solid."

Same here

None of the 3 Garmins I have has EVER given me the same route coming back as it gave me going. Must be a software algorithm we are not aware of.

When you live in a metropolitan area, there are seriously 15+ ways to go depending on traffic, it would be amazing if a device can learn your 15+ routes, then pick the best one. The last time I checked, such a service costs about $45,000/yr., $65,000 if they are cute (chauffeur)

Exact Opposite

I have heard the claim often that people's devices take them home a different route than used getting to some destination.

I just tried a trip to Canada to visit friends that I have often taken.
It seemed to me to be the exact opposite of the route there - although the wording at the bridge over the US - Canadian border might have been slightly different.

I guess the first question to ask those whose routes out and back are different should be whether the end point of the out route is the same as the start point of the back home route.

Various reasons ...

... Why route back won't match route there every time. Routing algorithms will be affected by traffic if your nuvi uses traffic, plus of course things like one way streets, left or right turns, roundabouts/traffic circles and anything else that might affect distance/times.

Reset the device or try

Reset the device or try reinstalling the update. If that fails drain the battery completely and charge.

Have yet..

Have yet to recieve the update on my c530.

Wrong routing

Just finished a 700 mile trip. Going was fine, no problems. Coming back to same place I left from, it took, or tried to take me off the interstate three times. The first time I fell for it, the GPS took me off the interstate, through town, down back country roads and back on the interstate at the next off/on ramp which was about three miles away. Cost me fifteen minutes. Then it tried to take be off of US 501 through downtown on Business 501 at 9:00 at night. Didn't fall for it that time. Yes, Garmin has some kind of problem.

Wrong routing

I normally follow the bread crumb back to my original start point.

It's been proven the the Garmin will avoid left turns, if it can.

fastest time or shortest distance?

Check the settings - was it Fastest Time or Shortest Distance?

Was it a "Where to?" so the nuvi calculated the route?

Was it a route/trip designed onboard the nuvi and saved?

Was it a route/trip designed in BaseCamp and loaded into the nuvi?

If it was a route/trip, were there any via points, and were different via points chosen for going and coming back?

What nuvi was it?

must be designed for UPS

must be designed for UPS

Conspiracy??

I've had this happen many times with several different GPSr's.

I saw a thread in another forum a few years back where the poster swears Garmin and HERE purposely route drivers past businesses who pay a premium for this service. It sounds like a conspiracy theory to me but it does make you wonder sometimes.

Avoiding Left Turns

Avoiding Left Turns is always good for a Motorcycle. You never know what is going to happen at a left turn.

dont know

why does GE ask you to update your maps after updating your maps I have 2017.10 ! ive been using 2017.10 and it works ok if their replacing a map glitch shouldn't they rename it 2017.10.1 so that a person knows it is an update to a map ?

It doesn't normally

Not sure why you're seeing that, as far as I know there isn't an update to the 2017.10 map and if there was in line with other times when it's been done in would be 2017.12 or something similar.

It will say you have maps to update if you've only installed a partial map, perhaps you've done that?

Wonder if a town can bribe Garmin to increase traffic in downtown smile
