School zones

I have no problem with the school zone alert being on.I pay attention to the posted school zone signs but also like the extra warning. Plus it lets me know how up to date the school zones mapping data is by Garmin..

User control of features.

I always like to see Garmin give users control of features and wish they would do this with more things. That said, I agree with Barney and Charlie that the School Zone Alert is one I would never want to turn off.

Wish

Wish I could turn off active lane guidance. It's one recently introduced feature I really dislike.

School Zones

Had my first experience School Zones recently. Thought it was a pretty cool feature. Wish it worked in more than 1/50 school zones in Phoenix.

It seems the school alerts only go off if there's a speed change on the road going by the school.

In my opinion, Garmin, implemented a stupid warning system. It equates to little more than a Speed Camera warning system. If we wanted we could have created a POI for the express purpose of alerting drivers to an up conning speed change in front of the school we could ha e done that without Garmins help.

Of course, Garmin's implementation can recognize time of day as well as day and make a decision not to go off which is better than we can do.

But I thi k we're better off knowing about all school zones, not just the ones that change speed during the day because it's a school district!

Bad Garmin!!! BAD GARMIN!!! Go to the penalty box.

3590?

Is this result with your nuvi 3590? It's hard to believe that you're seeing so few school zone alerts unless maybe the 3590 uses a much smaller school zone database than the newer models. I would expect that Phoenix would have closer to a 98% alert rate for school zones, at least with the newer nuvi devices. Can another 3590 owner report back with their detection rate of school zone alerts?

For owners of devices without (or with limited) school zone alerts, you can manually add them:

Not the case

While some school zones have speed limits and alert others don't but still alert on my nuvi. Here's one

I'm sure you know this but for others with a new nuvi offering school zone alerts, remember that the results observed on the GPS vary with time of day and day of week assuming the school zone database in the nuvi knows what the reduced speed limit is:

driving through a school zone on a school day during school hours gives a visual and audio alert and the nuvi speed limit is lowered to the school zone speed limit; driving through one on a school day before or after school hours results in the same alerts but without the speed limit change; and on weekends, no alert occurs at all.

Now if only we could have the nuvis know about school holidays and when the school year starts and ends (and whether Snow Days extend the intended end of year)... rolleyes

PS: I've only had one experience with Active Lane Guidance, but as you reported earlier, it's a feature I might like to disable.

Thanks!

Thanks!

School zone alerts still

School zone alerts still don't work in Toronto Canada area. These alerts started working in Hamilton Ontario more than a year ago and I thought we will get them in Toronto in the next couple of map updates. But unfortunately, still waiting..

Yes. Very few alerts with the nuvi 3590.

I think I have the newest updates. I may possibly be one firmware/map behind. I plan on updating soon, and will report back if the alert percentages change.
