Can't renew your license plate (Florida)? Here's why.

You loan your vehicle to a friend, friend gets ticket, you sign affidavit showing him as driver, he doesn't pay the fine, and then the state won't renew your tag. Well, not without some intervention anyway.

that surprising?

First of all, why would you loan a vehicle to someone. They get into a serious accident, who is monetarily responsible?

A $50 or $480 non-moving violation, it would make more sense to pay it, than to lose the reggie.

If said "friend" does not pay

a) is that really a friend
b) what do you expect, the municipality to eat the violation?

Ah, yes, we live in an entitled society. The sad part is teaching our children these ways, it won't help them, it will hurt them in the long run.

SunPass

Unpaid Sunpass tolls will also cause the same issue. My wife had that issue at work when the driver forgot to take the Sunpass and there were tolls that didn't get paid. The DMV wouldn't renew the truck until the tolls were paid.

I'm not a cop

I disagree with the whole deal. The state is making us legally responsible for ENFORCING (not obeying but ENFORCING) the law. How can they do that? It seems to me that ENFORCING the law is the responsibility of the state, not me. If the state wants their money, let them chase my friend down and make him pay.

Agree.
Whether, my ex-friend can return to my good graces or not is between us, the State or City can chase the evil doer that did the deed.

Plus, the excuse of "clerical error" or something like that is pure bull. They were going after the easiest target. Though knowing it was wrong, that is what the City or State was doing.

I don't know about Florida but Arizona

Tucson, when it still had RLC's, created new laws covering RLC citations so many civil rights of defense would not apply. Nov 3rd election changed that!!!

would you

cosign a loan for a friend? That is one of the absolute dumbest things one could do. One should not even cosign for a son or daughter. But if you feel the quality of a friendship is measured by how financially on the hook you are for them, so be it.

If you loan a car to a "friend," and feel good, then pay the fine, that is part of the loan. What a bunch of semantics.

Friends

Friends are people I can trust.

Sounds like ...

... the state agreed that he wasn't responsible. Too bad it took involvement of the news media before someone there decided to do their job.

Honestly, would you teach your children such a blanket statement?

I had a close friend for 9 years break that friendship, because her son did not get into an elite college, and I told her in my opinion, the college he did get into is not worth $72,000 per year, of which she would have to come up with $28,000 CASH, after loans and grants, for 4 years, when she has $0 saved up. This offended her and we're not friends anymore. This is a female friend with whom I have shared details of my sexual history when single.

You have to be realistic, and one thing that I would teach my children (he's young <2 y.o.) is to not involve money or financial matters with friendship.

If you blanketly trust your friends, try going into business with them, that will be interesting.

A car is something with unlimited liability, and imho generally unwise to loan out to others. If you own a home, it will be on the line in the event of a mishap.

Why would you call someone a

Why would you call someone a friend if you cant trust them? There are a lot of people I socialize with that I wouldn't lend a car to and a couple friends I would.

loan a car

have we all found yet that you are responsible for your car and any damage caused by it , that's why you don't lend your car to an irresponsible person friend or not . he runs a red light in your car you get the ticket ! why because you are responsible for your car . if he gets into an accident and there are police involved then he get the ticket , its not the states problem to figure out who was driving you are responsible for your car. and you must do all the work to prove it wasn't you !! and if the driver you lend your car to isn't insured shame on you guess what happens ? and of course your insurance co will raze your insurance rates ! if there that good a friend offer them a ride then there are no problems and you did a friend a big favor !
