nüviCam™ LMTHD

Does this new unit use trip planner? I like creating custom routes with Base Camp or MapSource and then uploading them. I never liked the way Trip Planner handles custom made routes so I am currently using a Nuvi 1490 since most models after that used the Trip Planner software.

The

The NuviCam does use Trip Planner:

Garmin abandoned the old "route" system many models ago, as you have seen. I would add that Garmin has made changes and an improvements to the way Trip Planner functions over the years and it really isn't all that bad anymore.

Silly question...

Is there a difference tween routes and trip planner?

I finally figured out how to make a route in Base camp.

Just wondering if these two are similar, routes, and trip planner?

Feel free to "s-plain" for me!!!!

I may have to investigate further as it was the way trip planner handled the routes that was most annoying. I really disliked the fact that it would only route you to the next point and not allow the complete route to be calculated the way the old routing system did. Not holding my breath as the link you provided didn't seem to show a lot of change in that aspect.

The

The link was provided to confirm that the NuviCam uses Trip Planner, not to show any changes to how the Planner works.

It has ben fixed.

I do not see a reply to this so here goes: Trip Planner was fixed a while ago, it now flows from point to point. BTW Via points are very nice.

New 'trip planner'

I too stuck with my 1490 as I disliked the original trip planner. I bought a 2508 once Garmin altered the way trip planner works, and it's very similar to the older style 'route planner' now in that it shows the full route. Where it gains, and a big plus in my view, is that trip planner accepts routes from BaseCamp while retaining shaping points sent by BaseCamp making route planning/navigation much easier. I wouldn't now go back to 'route planner' on the 1490.

Route versus trip planner

Yes, there's a difference, used to be massive but now the two are very similar although as I explained above trip planner in my view is now better than route planner ever was.

BTW don't get confused between 'trip planner' in BaseCamp and 'Trip Planner' on a nuvi, the two are confusingly called the same but bear little relation to each other!

NuviCam Trip Planner

Just got a NuviCam and find that the built in Trip Planner is somewhat different than my 3597. If nothing else touching a Stopping point does not give you the option of converting it to a Via, or am I missing something.
One other point, the camera is always on, even when not recording or any alerts are activated. This is a battery killer when trying to do sentups on your couch!

how about like this?

What??? You not have a power source to charge your Nuvi next to your couch for this very purpose?

I have something like this

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA4TK29879...

This one is a bit lite for my needs, as mine has 31000 Mamph and a 1 Amp and 2 Amp usb output port.

Works great for me and I almost always have it in my shirt pocket.

Power supply for,nuvicam

I asked garmin about using any power supply with a 5v 2amp output to keep the Nuvicam powered up,when not in the car, like perhaps the iPad charger. Of,course they discourage using anything other than the garmin AC adapter for,the Nuvicam, p/n 1147802. I'm not an engineer but seems to me 5v2amp output,is,the same regardless where it,originates. Of course some AC adapters may not be particularly well made and could cause a spike I guess. I also think you could use one of those auxiliary battery packs designed for the smart phones and tablets which has 5v2amp output; can't have a spike this way. Opinions?

Don't know

I don't know about the Nuvicam, but if it is like my 3597LMTHD, it can be pretty "picky" about the power adapter used. Many of my power adapters that work fine on my older nuvi's and used to work OK with the 3597 will now give the "incompatible charger" error on the 3597. This was a "feature" added by Garmin a while back as a software update on the 3597. I have some 2A charges that work with my 3597 and some that don't

I'm not really lost.... just temporarily misplaced!

Misc Nuvicam comments.

About chargers: As you probably know the GreatGarmin put out a firmware update for the 3597 that disabled the unit with an "incompatible" charger, they soon put out a new firmware that just gives a warning but the unit still operates. According to Garmin my wall USB socket is not usable with the 3597 but in fact does charge the unit and I can do 12+hr simulation runs.
The Nuvicam gives no such warning on the same USB but will die in a couple of hours if I try any simulation run.
The unit: The safety features do not work in my car (Subaru Outback) when the unit is on a Bean Bag mount, the image of the hood fills up just about half of the camera view and "optimum" camera alignment is not possible. On the windscreen mount it takes up too much area for my liking. The larger screen is easier for my old eyes but not worth the disadvantages. It is easy to remove with the magnetic mount but really too large and heavy to fit in my cargo pants pocket. I think it will go to eBay.

Nice!

I want one of these!!!

Interesting

Interesting. Thanks.
