Pop up window from Microsoft Windows

Plugged in my 1450 for GE and a window popped up stating
'Do you want to scan and fix removable disc (M)?. There might be a problem with some files on this device or disc.'
When I finish with GPS on computer, I have always disconnected from computer the same way. First time for this message. I didn't think it was reading or writing a file at the time of disconnect. Not sure I want to proceed with the fix part.
Any suggestions?

1450

If the 1450 is working well, I suggest not letting Windows repair the GPS.

OK

Will find out for sure this weekend. Will try out something before that. Thanks.

A quote from this web site http://www.ghacks.net/2010/11/27/disable-do-you-want-to-scan... "Sometimes you see the prompt "Do you want to scan and fix removable disk" when you connect a removable device to your Windows PC. This usually happens if the device was not properly disconnected from the system in a previous session. It is more of a "we assume there is a problem because last time.." than a de facto problem".

Proper Disconnect Depends On Mode

When the GPS is attached in Mass Storage mode, it will appear to have a drive letter assigned and should only be disconnected by using Safely Remove or the Eject options, which will be disallowed (a warning will appear) if there are any open files on the GPS which could otherwise be damaged, triggering the warning you saw on the next reconnect.

Mass Transfer mode has no drive letter assigned and allows you to disconnect at will, but hides the hidden .System directory (if your GPS has it) which impacts your ability to do a complete backup prior to an update, although not the update itself.

Backup.

This would be a good time to do a complete backup (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394) of your 1450 BEFORE things go from bad to worse. Make sure you expose the hidden \.system folder before doing the backup: http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39185.

Sometimes the backup procedure itself will tell you if there are any serious corruption problems on the device ... for example if the backup fails bcause it can't read a file on the device.

Long time

aland It has been some time since my last backup but in doing it this time, it says it will take almost 3 hours to back up my SD card. Is that normal?
I did try plugging in the unit several times and didn't receive the message. Those times I did use the 'safely remove....'.
I checked the time again to copy and now it is almost 4 hours.

@jbees60

How big is that SD card?

4 hours?

It depends of course on the data volume you have on the card, but 4 hours seems excessive. These problems could indicate that your USB port is going bad. I don't mean to alarm you, but the USB connection is a frequent point of failure on these models, and when it starts to go bad it can show up as unusual charging and data transfer problems. So it is something to be aware of and watch for further symptoms.

It shows

1.34 GB free of 7.39 GB.

6 GB.

I can typically back up 6 GB from my nuvi over the USB connection in less than an hour, so 4 hours does not seem normal. If you have a card reader, you could try backing up the SD card through a card reader. That will tell you if it is the nuvi connection causing the slowness.

OOps

I forgot about using the card reader. Would have been much quicker I'm sure. Will still have to save the units memory later.
Wow! About 20 minutes ago it showed 1 hour to go. A little later it was 4 hours. And just now it shows.....10 hours and the progress bar is half way across. I hope it is not my connections.
My map downloads were about the same as most here posted.

Get a couple of these

Since most of us have mutiple devices that use a micro SD card, I suggest that you consider several of these.

http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-SDDR-121-A11M-MobileMate-Memor...

Being the computer geek that I am, I carry one that has multiple portable apps in a plastic pouch in my pocket.

But, it will easily accept the SD card in my GPS units when I want to inspect what is on them.

Free shipping, no sales tax: worth a shot.

Memory Cards

just my opinion but i never ever come close to filling up a memory card or hard drive. Maybe 75 percent full max. they need working room. have seen them get confused when near full

8 GB

When it finally finished, I looked at the SD card and it is an 8 GB. Will have to look into my problems.
I don't know about some of you, but I remember the old floppies listed in the MB or KB capacity. And they were MUCH bigger in size.
I will look into a bigger SD card. Just to have extra room. Thanks.

A new SD may help ...

but only if the old one is defective. I don't really think a larger card will help ... but good luck anyway smile

Good article, however I "eject" my GPS the proper way every time and still get the message the next time I plug it in.

The only thing I can think of it when I go to dismount the "mass storage device" is that the micro sd card inserted into the GPS is not being dismounted as well.

Either way I ignore the message when I see it.

I've tested my nuvi with an added SD card. As you suspect, to avoid the popup Windows message, you need to safely disconnect both the SD card and the nuvi before pulling the cable.

thanks
