iPhones & Airplane Mode

I just learned this today: If you have a device with iOS 8.2 or earlier, Airplane Mode will also turn off GPS...

So - on iPhones running any iOS after 8.3 - Airplane Mode will leave the GPS receiver working on the device, and you can use it with an app that stores full maps on the device without a need for a cellular or wifi data connection.

Great News

Now I can save on some data.

a much grumbled about change...

...that finally got made!

Yes, some of us would like to use our GPS in, guess what, airplanes! (among other places.)

Control over those subsystems is pretty good, but I'd like an easier way. I'm a bit paranoid some times, and in some shopping malls I want to turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. I have to authenticate to the device, pull up the shortcuts, and turn off the services I don't want. Haven't figured out a simpler or better way yet.

4S or later...

If you think you need to upgrade your hardware to run new software -- iOS 9.1 runs on the iPhone 4S and newer. (I use my old 4S as a test monkey.)

I'm Quite the Opposite it seems.

I've always known that Airplane mode disabled GPS on the iPhone (well, at least since my iPhone 3G on iOS 3 something). What I did not realize was that on the new iOS, it finally allows GPS to work while the device is in Airplane mode.

Thanks for the heads up!!!!

And - welcome back!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled forum - already in progress . . .

Good News

I had not heard this before. Thank you. This could prove to be quite useful.

That's good too know. I'm

That's good too know. I'm going to try it out the next time I'm on a flight somewhere. Thanks

Keep in mind...

One needs to have an app that stores full maps on device... Like Navigon... an app that loads as it goes for maps is pretty much useless once it runs out of cached map data...
