Map Update (files on the PC)

Downloading V2016.10 to my 2699LMTHD keeps timing out on my Verizon MiFi. So I went to another WiFi connection and downloaded to my PC only using Garmin Express

How do I now update the Garmin maps from the files on the PC? I haven't found a way to use Garmin Express. BaseCamp Update Map says I don't have enough room because it's apparently trying to save the prior version and download the new version and won't allow me to uncheck the prior version.

Also trying to download to the Garmin with Garmin Express indicated 5.6GB. But after downloading the files to the PC the folder size is 2.87GB. Seems strange?

Use MapInstall

You may have to manually copy the previous map version to your computer for backup and delete from the Garmin. That would be .System\gmapprom.img, .sum and .unl.

Lose Junction views?

To update a nuvi 2699 and keep its features like junction view, the only options are to use Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater. Both will auto-delete the older maps and other files and install the new map and features like junction view and voice recognition updates needed by the new map.

MapInstall is a way to update the map file only from a map on a computer, but it loses the other features such as junction view and also remember that MapInstall will not delete older map files, so that will need to be done manually.

The best solution and only solution that preserves the nuvi's features is to have the computer with attached nuvi access the internet with a fairly fast broadband connection. As the OP suggests, using a Mifi connection may not work well if the connection is sporadic or slow. In a pinch and assuming the OP has a laptop, the solution may be to bring the computer and nuvi to a library or McDonald's/Starbucks/etc. and update the device via wifi...or have a good friend with a speedy DSL or cable internet connection.

CATraveler, when you updated the map to your computer via wifi, why didn't you have you nuvi connected and update the nuvi as well?

Regarding the 5.6 vs. 2.87GB sizes, the 2016.10 map file alone is well over 2GB. Features like the jcv file and various voice recognition updates are extra. If the computer doesn't have BaseCamp installed, the download will also include the entire BaseCamp program.

Thanks for the input and

Thanks for the input and I'll wait until I can get better access and use Garmin Express. All of my attempts to download to the device with the MiFi timed out or at least the download time was increasing a minute every second. The time started out at about 2.5 hours.

Does Garmin Express partition the download such that should any possible restart occur it would not have to start from scratch?

Program

In the days of 14.4kb, 28kb and 56kb modems there were 3rd party programs for downloading so that if your connection died then it would let you start where you had left off.
Haven't heard of one for a long time.
