Nuvi 2555LMT log not accessible

Hi. I'll start with the same three magic words often found at the beginning of a post like this: I just got (lol) a Nuvi2555LMT. I've charged it up, disconnected it from my computer, turned it on, put it in my backpack, get on my motorcycle, ride about 1-1.5hrs to my destination, then I find it looks like it's turned off. Sometimes I can turn it on and it looks like the battery is still fully charged.

Today, I brought my laptop and used it to charge the Nuvi. When I tried to turn it back on to go home, it wouldn't turn on. When I got home, I plugged it into my computer for 20 seconds, unplugged it, and turned it on. It said the battery was half-charged.

What am I doing wrong? I found some .gpx files that Basecamp said are corrupt. I've only been able to import four logs so far (three logs were from the same one-way trip).

Also, I've thought about getting one of those mobile chargers (roughly similar to http://www.amazon.com/OLALA-Dual-port-Portable-External-Smar...). Could I use something similar to this as an external power supply during use?

Thanks to all.

Battery life

The 2555 specs state:

Battery life: up to 2.5 hours

and I expect most folks will find that they never experience a life as long as the advertised maximum. Adding an external power supply as you suggest is a good suggestion. Your link also shows a model $3 more than the one you selected with added mAh which may be better for a longer trip.

In my opinion, Nuvi models really aren't intended for any extended use without an external power supply.

.

If your main use your GPS is to record tracks on battery power, a nuvi is probably not the best choice. The nuvi series is designed for on-road navigation and is intended to be powered by the power adaptor rather than the battery for anything except short periods. If you do intend to use the nuvi for navigation, you will want to get it mounted and powered by your motorcycle.

The handheld models (like the Garmin Etrex, Oregon and Montana series) are ideal for track recording for extended time periods using the battery power. And if you purchase the City Navigator maps, they can also be used for road navigation.

Thank you

Thank you. I noticed the 2.5 hour battery life when I got it. I also noticed a lot of other Nuvis have 2-hour battery lives. That's part of why I got the 2555.

I had a 1450LMT. Long story short: I bricked it, followed online help and still couldn't get it to work. When it worked, nearly every log was saved and accessible when I got home. If the battery couldn't keep up with my bike (lol), I still had a log file I could access later that showed most of the ride.

As for the 2555, I've put the brightness at 0% to conserve the battery before I pack it. (The way I see it, I won't look at it while I'm riding, so I don't need the brightness all the way up.) I tested this setting the other day and shut it off after 3.5 hours, still with plenty of battery left. However, on normal use, when I get to where the lighting is poor enough to see the screen, I can't turn it on. Since its battery works for 2.5 hours, I'll try putting the battery on 20% to see if it's more an issue of user error.

On the other hand, I just made a cheat sheet so I can blindly (literally!) adjust the brightness. In the process, the unit shut off on its own. I'd gone to Settings, and it shows a different menu than what I'd expected before shutting itself off. I could turn it on immediately. I got a refurbed unit, so maybe I can see what Garmin has to say about it.

Does anyone know how many mAh the 2555 internal battery is rated for? I couldn't find this information for any Nuvis.

Thank you.

I expect the nuvi 2555 battery is around 1000 mAh if, as I expect, it's like the replacement batteries available:

It might work. My wife and I each have one of those. But they both detect when our phones are fully charged and it shuts off after that. They don't keep supplying power once the phone's internal battery gets fully charged. If you kept the remote charging battery accessible, you could turn it back on every hour or so, I suppose.

If you don't have the power

If you don't have the power connected, it will go to sleep after a short time, and will not continue tracking or navigating.

PICNIC

That may be what's happening, more or less. After my usual 5 1/2-hour doze last night, I thought I was having a PICNIC (Problem In Chair, Not In Computer) due to the brightness setting. After testing it today, it looks like if I turn it on from a full shutdown, it loads to where it's looking for satellites, then it crashes. When I boot up again, the Garmin splash screen comes on, the device loads normally, and it seems to work fine from then on. I don't get the double-tap lock on either bootup.

As for my battery/charger theory, I usually don't ride more than an hour and a half or so at a time. It looks like a charger may fit my needs. I'll get on Amazon over the weekend to see what I come up with.

Thanks to all.

You might also want to check the chargers on Monoprice. I have had good luck with products from Monoprice.

Monoprice

I wish you hadn't mentioned Monoprice. I just found a dozen other things I want! lol. j/k.

Btw, I used my GPS for 3 1/2 hours today on a single charge. Not surprisingly, the battery was getting low. Iirc, I had the brightness on 20% either one or both ways. Still, it seemed to work without crashing. I was a little surprised to see that both directions of commuting were on the same log file, even though I'd turned the Nuvi fully off for 3 hours between commutes. I like this way instead of my 1450's tendency to split the trips into separate files.

I also found out that the screen I wasn't expecting was because this newbie accessed the settings from the dashboard instead of the main "Where to?" menu. That takes care of this question.

You all were very helpful. Thank you. This seems mostly to be a case of a newbie needing to get familiar with the product. Much like my upcoming Monoprice shopping spree! smile
