2460 not showing roads after 2016.10

This just happened. After updating to 2016.10, there are no roads displayed on the screen. The vehicle icon is there and will leave a 'bread crumb' trail. I can choose a destination and it will appear to route, but it will just show the route line, not any roads. All menus seem to work and the settings/System/myMaps shows 2016.10 and is checked.
I have performed 2 map re installs, used map updater to re install firmware, and hard reset all to no avail.
Since I suspect a corrupt file, is there a way to completely wipe and re install the system. BTW, I hope there is a repository of system files somewhere because I can't find them.
I called Garmin, they said because the 2460 is no longer supported, my only option is to send it in and receive a 20% discount on an upgrade.
This unit is for our motor home tow vehicle, and we have an RV760 (which I really like) for our motor home.
I hope that someone here has a solution before I have to chuck this unit and buy a refurb somewhere.
Thanks

That did it!
Thank you so much. The GPS that Garmin said had to be replaced is working again!
The larger base map solved my last remaining problems.
Thank you all who helped me through this. I really didn't want to have to buy a new GPS for our tow vehicle. We basically use it for 'where am I' and then to route us back to camp when we're out and about.
Ha!

Ha, so I go out to lunch and everything is solved by the time I return. Correct?
Is the conclusion that everything tt initially described was due to a missing basemap? This is good to know for future discussions. Odd, too, that somehow the Garmin Express deleted the basemap during a map update. I think we've known that a deleted basemap will not be restored by Garmin Express, WebUpdater, or GarminMapUpdater but it's good to be reminded of this...yet another reason to have a full backup of all files on a nuvi.
tt, if any problems arise with the basemap you have now, just let me know and I'll get the one from my 2460 to you.
And for others new here or reading this thread far into the future, note that here at The Factory we've received two confirmations from Garmin that it is OK to share stock files like this in order to repair a GPS. We don't offer or even discuss pirate maps and sharing other subscription-based items like maps, Garmin-traffic files, etc. but for an occasional missing file, Garmin is OK with sharing and probably even wishes we'd do it more since it saves a lot of effort by their paid tech support folks.
tt, I'm glad it worked out but from your first post starting the thread, I never thought it'd be solved this way.
Glad

Glad I could help and everything is now working.☺
The file is from my 3597 but appears to be the same one that is on my 2460, so you should be good.

Great!
I am glad you were able to resurrect your 2460 from what seemed like a near disaster. I suspect the main problem all along was the missing Base Map with the map display zoomed all the way out making it appear the map file was missing or corrupt. That said, it doesn't explain the check disk errors you encountered or why the base map diappeared in the first place. But in any case, you stuck with it and got it repaired. Congratulations.
This is a good lesson for all POI Factory members ... make a complete backup of your nuvi. Jgermann and others give this advice all the time, and this thread demonstrates how important it is. You can never predict when a major problem like this is going to happen.

...and where the 2016.10 map file was, since it was on tt's device but not in the standard folder and not in any other folder we could find—plus the device starting with under 400MB of free space while other 2460 folks had over 2GB. Mystery of mysteries.
A test

What a good idea to test. I'll leave it to other to test other models (and I do hope some folks will test other models because I've always found my 2460 did some odd things mapwise compared to other nuvi series).
OK, on my normally-functioning 2460 with the current 2016.10 map, I disabled the basemap. I then disconnected the 2460 from the PC and powered it up. While acquiring satellites, what did I see? I saw a nuvi display with no streets. My vehicle was there and my nearby custom POI icons showed, but no roads. I set the GPS simulator on and created a route to a store on the other side of town and told it to go—a jagged pink line (the route to the store using roads) appeared on the blank roadless display. As time went on with the simulator off, the satellite lock occurred and there was no difference. I zoomed way in and out with no roads appearing. Since my initial startup with no signal still show two nearby custom POI icons, I don't think the roadless appearance was due to a big global zoom-out but at least I checked to see if the zoom had an effect.
This certainly would have been a surprise to me before this thread started.
I then re-enabled the basemap, and guess what?
No roads!
Just kidding, with the basemap re-enabled, the roads fully reappeared even while "Acquiring Satellites."
But at least for the nuvi 2460, even with a functional City Navigator map file, no roads will be seen unless the device's basemap file is also present and functional.
Excantly
So glad you were able to confirm this strange behavior. These were exactly my symptoms.
All seems to be working now with the restoration of the base map file.

Let us know that you have made a backup.
I prefer the method detailed by http://www.poi-factory.com/node/36398.
For others reading this thread - although it has been said above by Craig and alan - please make a backup today. It does not take a lot of time - just get it started and let it run - but it will be invaluable if you ever run into a problem like ttait.
Just make sure your device is in Mass Storage mode See:

Since
Since the OP posted this earlier:
"Right now I'm backing up the 2460 to a PC folder. 4.62GB, about 20 minutes left."
It would appear he has a newly created backup with the possible exception of a good gmapbmap.img file which he can easily download again or create a copy from his retored 2460.

Just checking
@t923347, after this wild adventure, my goal was to make sure that his backup did complete. He said he had 20 minutes left. My ISO backups of my 2495 take about 25 minutes so I felt that ttait was far from finished.
Thanks, my backup did
Thanks, my backup did complete, I substituted the larger base map file into the backup directory so it should be complete and correct. I will probably now make an imgburn .iso of both units as soon as it becomes a little less crazy around here.
I've used imgburn for years, never realized that I could make an .iso of a GPS. What a good idea.
Thanks, everyone, for helping me solve this.
