Traffic (Compared nuvi 3597 vs Viago)

My family and I are currently on E/B I-94 near Camp Dodge WI. I have my wife driving so that I can compare traffic between my Garmin Nuvi 3597 and Garmin Viago. We just got out of a huge backup. The Nuvi 3597 gave no alert. Then I checked Viago and it had the information. So, if I added the paid traffic app on the Nuvi, would it have had the same information as Viago?

Great idea

Smartphone Link Vs Viago

Jim: If by "paid traffic app" you are referring to Garmin's Smartphone Link with Live traffic, then yes, the information provided is essentially the same as Viago.

Smartphone Link calls its traffic feature "Live Traffic" while Viago calls it "Traffic Live" but in the few comparison tests I've done, the information is all but identical. Report timing and the way the information is displayed varies between the two platforms.

Keep in mind, the observations I've made are not extensive and are confined to the same general geographic area. Results could vary in other locations.

As you are probably aware, Garmin no longer markets Viago. It remains to be seen how long the app will continue to be supported.

I have Smartphone Link with Live Traffic on my 3597 and in the areas I travel here in the northeast, IMO, it can't be beat.

Waze

If you're going to use data from your smartphone just use Waze. The traffic, police and accident info is up to the minute, unless you're in a really remote area where there are no other Wazers, but then there wouldn't be any traffic anyway.

Waze is a data hog. Smartphone link only transfers traffic data as needed without sucking down maps that have to be updated. The Nuvi has the maps, it only need traffic data.

I used Waze to go from Central VA to Titusville, FL, to Wildwood, FL then back to Central VA. I used less than 500mb for the whole trip.

Waze

Yeah, I use Waze a couple times a month to go from the Chicago area to Northern Wisconsin, a six hour trip each way. The data usage is minimal. Last week I was driving home from Milwaukee when Waze told me to get off the interstate. I was doing 70 at the time so was going to ignore it, but figured, what the heck, let's see where it takes me. I took a picture a couple minutes later, but don't think I can post it here, of the interstate at a standstill, while I cruised along the empty frontage road. Saved me a several mile backup. I love Waze. I use my Garmin too, since I think the maps are easier to see, and most times they send me on the same route. But I prefer Waze for the traffic, accident reports, and police locations. My GPS does traffic, but Waze beats it every time as far as being up to date.

Similar experience with Nuvi 2598 and smartphone link traffic

Smartphone link here in SF Bay Area is vastly superior to coverage through the HD traffic that comes with the unit. When I'm doing a trip where traffic can have a significant impact I use my nuvi in conjunction with smartphone link on my iphone.

Traffic

My wife is driving N/B on I-75 through Kentucky as I type this. Today, we are running both the Garmin Nuvi 3597 and Google maps. We are looking at the Nuvi, but also listening to Google maps. They do vary about an hour and 15 minutes on the ETA. I wonder if Google maps takes into account the Time Zone change?

Waze

I usually use Waze and HD traffic on my Garmin. Together they seem to work well at routing me around any traffic issues.

Last weekend I tried google maps instead of Waze through Indiana and google was incorrect much of the time. May have just been that weekend or the area we were in.

Traffic

How ironic. Indiana is the area where we noticed issues.

I have always felt where

I have always felt where Garmin really needs to improve in the the up to the minute traffic reporting.

.

Traffic data is only as good as how fast you can get it to the device. You can be tooling along on the freeway and have an accident happen one minute or even five minutes before you reach it. Will you be informed in time for you to make a judgement on what to do? At one minute, no way. At five minutes, it's highly doubtful it would even be in the system yet. At ten minutes, probably. Long term closure, yes.
