Garmin 2595LMT

Frys has a refurb 2595LMT for $90.
It has "3D Traffic".
We discussed their higher end HD Traffic, but I don't find any reference to what is different. It might be the 'regular' garmin traffic.

That seems pretty cheap for a 5" LMT unit.

Is has some sort of voice command.

Can anyone who has one of those tell about it?

Traffic

For folks with a Smartphone willing to pay $20 for a one-time subscription to Live Traffic on the Garmin Smartphone Link app, they will receive much better traffic data with a 2595 than what the included 3D traffic offers.

Not the only cost

You MUST also have a data plan for the smartphone which is an additional cost !

Ah, I see. I have a prepaid Tracfone Smartphone, probably the cheapest way to have a smartphone for folks who rarely talk, text or use a lot of data, so I am not the one to ask about overall smartphone issues.

With a Tracfone prepaid phone, I do know to watch, monitor and minimize my usage, whether phone, text or data. I can say that the Smartphone Link app does not use a lot of data, but yes, a data plan is required for it to work.

I admit I have assumed that all smartphones have some amount of a data plan that could be used for the Garmin app. I hope I'm correct.

Here's some discussion of the topic, with an incognito cameo role from our own DorkusN:

Think outside the box as well. Use the budget carriers such as Cricket and Wal-Mart for service on the national networks for bout half of what an ATT or Verizon would charge.

How much data does it use?

Do you have a feeling how much data the garmin app uses when doing traffic for the standalone GPS unit?

I would imagine it would not be a lot.

Thanks for the info.

CraigW posted a link earlier in this thread to a very helpful discussion in another group on traffic plan comparison and data use:

I agree with the posters who say Live Traffic is the better option and that its data consumption is relatively insignificant with moderate use.

Is a Smartphone Really “Smart” Without a Data Plan? For those who are concerned about data, there is an option that will allow the use of apps like Live Traffic on your smartphone without a data plan.

Get a pay as you go voice and text plan (no data) from Walmart. Add the free Smartphone Link app to your smartphone and link them to your compatible GPSr. Spring for Garmin’s Live Traffic (a onetime $20 expense).

As you travel, take advantage of the ever increasing number of free WiFi hotspots available along the road. Each time you stop for lodging, gas, food, a pit stop or even a POI, the Live Traffic data will refresh via WiFi, warning you of delays on the next leg of your trip. It is even possible to pick up free WiFi as you drive through a hot spot located close to the highway.

Here at the Factory, Rainsux created two files with business locations offering free WiFi which would be useful using this scheme.

I know it sounds crude and I haven’t tried it myself but I know two people who swear it works. No it isn’t really “Live” information due to the time lag between WiFi hotspots but it is free. I can see where this plan would have its drawbacks on long stretches of interstate through rural America however.

No data plan.

Practically speaking, if you have a smartphone you really are going to want a data plan.

I use about 1 gb or less a month. Without data at all a smartphone would be crippled.

When the Iphone first came out I went and looked at it, at ATT. They asked "How many phone minutes do you want". I responded, "none, I only want data. I don't talk on the phone." I couldn't get that, not from them, not then.

We've come full circle. The internet is the PSTN of the 21st century.
