delete files?

When I plug my Garmin 855 into my laptop it automatically starts the Garmin Express program. In this program there is a Device storage tab that tells me my device memory is 95% full. Is there a way to delete unused files from the internal storage? How can I tell which files to delete? Do I need to delete files from the internal memory if I use a memory card?

Making room

The nuvi 855 is one of the small number of nuvis still being used that will not automatically install maps to a SD card when the installer finds that there's not enough internal storage for the full map. So deleting unneeded files (after making and storing a full backup just in case) is a good idea for this model.

Note that your 855 does not use MTP mode so the discussion of switching to MS mode in the above faq can be skipped.

The files to delete which will gain you the most space with the least loss of function are the navigational voice files and voice recognition files in languages you do not speak.

How to clone a map to an SD card (which will work on the 855):

Your 855 does not have a .system folder so discussion of this can be skipped in the above faq.

If you try a map update and the updater tells you that you can only install a portion of North America, then freeing up space or using the clone technique is a way to "get more map" for the 855.

855 and cloning.

To add to CraigW's post, with a 4 or 8 GB micro SD card with cloning, you can easily get the full CN NA map installed and the full coverage JCV file (if you can find it) and have a fully functioning 855.

On my 855, I keep everything in internal storage (full NA map and large full coverage JCV file) except the voice recognition files (which I don't use that often). The voice recognition still works fine with the .srx and .asr voice recognintion files on SD.

If you need further assistance with your 855, don't hesitate to ask.

855

Long ago I deleted all Help files, Jpegs, MP3 files and languages I do not need or use on the 855. But I still need to use the cloning method to a SD card. The newest maps are just too big for my 855.

The most important files are

The most important files are hidden by default. Do a full backup then it's pretty easy to guess which are safe to delete.
