Time for an upgrade...

After six or seven years of living (happily!) with my old Nuvi 255W I've purchased one of the 'manufacturer refurbed' 2699LMT-HD receivers. There are a number of sellers of this GPS on eBay and elsewhere for $200.

Does anyone know what the situation is with this model? It apparently isn't regarded as "available" from Garmin although their website does show it as an apparent production unit available only through dealers.

I'm not seeing that model

Garmin US does not list a 2699 in any flavor. There is a 2599 which, from all reports, is a solid unit. The only extra for the unit I would suggest is signing up for traffic through the SmartLink app.

nüvi® 2699LMTHD

The nüvi® 2699LMTHD is listed under "Business/Navigators" - I'n not sure what that category is used for.

sounds like

Sounds like it may be designed for fleet use in that the units can be managed with a separate program. Bells and Whistles not needed in a personal unit but useful for rental cars, delivery drivers etc where the company provides the vehicles and units.

This Model Number Sold at Costco

Or so it appears. I know many manufacturers sell their technology items through Club stores and use different Model numbers. This Garmin Nuvi 2699LMT-HD was one model listed in Costco stores.

Rent a car, load all kinds of things on a rental GPS..time zones for Uganda adjusted for United States coordinates, state lines adjusted to be exactly backwards, reverse till roads so those that are tolls become not till and vise versa.

Just think of the mayhem these mutilated GPS's would cause as they traverse around the country!!

Some of us are just BadAss'es and can't help thinking about doing mischievous things.

Get a map of the Siberia on an as cars and leave it in the GPS as the default MAP.

Install a map voice speaking Hindu and have it be the default voice..

Change the default text to be Spanish.

You really don't need to do that as many of the units provided are still the old C530 unit with maps dating back to the late 90's, early 00's. That's enough to get any user confused.

I love it!!!!!

Nothing better that messing with people, too bad you couldn't just film it all via the Garmin and upload it to show the comments and expressions of the people who discover they have changed continents and languages.

Seems to be OK as a GPS - although Bluetooth didn't work out....

I installed the GPS last week using a Garmin beanbag mount, which works great! The GPS receiver works fine, although a few of the add-on features are hit-or-miss such as voice recognition, which only processes my requests accurately about half the time. Strangely, the voice recognition appears to work better while the car is underway and when there is some noise in the background!

Bluetooth didn't work the way I expected / wanted; since the Garmin is a BT receiver it will only pair with a BT transmitter - such as a smartphone. It won't pair with another receiver such as my car's BT system, so there isn't any way to feed the audio directions from the Garmin through the car's audio system. That's a bummer, but since the built-in speaker is pretty big (and loud enough) I can live with it.
