Garmin Announces its new RV660 GPS, a 6” Version of the Popular RV760

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/on-the-road/rv/rv-660lmt/pro...

This unit could be a solution for RV’ers and trailer haulers with limited dash space who thought the 7” RV760 was too cumbersome.

Appears to have all the features of the 760 plus a few more.

The unit will not ship for 5 to 8 weeks though, and may be too late for a good portion of the 2015 summer season.

Differences

Other than the size are there any significant differences between the two units?

Biggest difference is probably in the display type of the new 660. Also Easy Route Shaping and Foursquare support.

I also noticed "Headphone jack/audio line-out" on this unit. Something I haven't seen for quite sometime on Garmin units...or maybe I just haven't been paying attention.

I too haven't seen an headphone\audio out jack on Nuvi's for a very long time. But looking at the specs and even the manual I see no mention of an audio out jack. Can you please advise where you saw this specification.

Both the RV 760, Dezl 760 and a few Nuvi's Have Audio Out Jacks

On the RV 760, Dezl 760, Dezl 770 and Nuvi 2757, 2789 and 2797 units, it is located on the quick release adapter that connects the unit to the G ball mount. It can be seen in the picture if you look closely:

The RV 660 may use a similar scheme but I can’t be sure since the above mount is not compatible with the 660.

@bdhsfz6

Thanks for the information, I do see the the jack on the mount.
The 660 mount looks identical to the 760 mount only different part numbers so the mounts are not interchangeable.

I can't understand why Garmin does not show both of the units have audio jacks, it's a good selling feature and I'm glad some of the newer units now have it again.

Just scroll down under "Physical & Performance" and it's at the bottom of that list. You can also clarify the list to show ONLY the differences by clicking the "Show only differences" button near the top of the page.

Thanks for directing me to the location. I did look at all the details but missed it, sucks getting old, I make far more mistakes now then in my younger years.

Amazing how much even the most basic GPS has altered our RV'ing life! My wife and I hit the road without a clue as to where we will stop for the night, counting on a campground POI file to find the nearest campground.

It just keeps getting better.

I agree, there is no question about the usefulness of RV friendly GPS units in finding a place to stay. For me, the biggest advantage is finding routes and places to stop that are suitable for truck / trailer or large RV's.

Cant find mine?

I have been looking at the mount for my 2797 and can't find an audio out jack. There is an identation in the plastic housing but no socket. Is it only available on US models?

It Is Possible...

It is possible the mount shown in the link below is not the one shipped standard with the Nuvi units that are listed as compatible. It may actually be an upgrade. I can confirm that it is standard with the RV 760 and Dezl 760 models.

I'm not sure about US vs foreign units but I briefly owned a 2798 here in the US and that unit had the audio out jack.

No Audio Output Jack on the RV660

if I read the chart of differences correctly.

Think the size of this unit would be a better fit on my dash.....guess the output jack would not be a deal breaker!

You're Correct

You did read the differences correctly, there is no audio out jackon the 660. The 760 and 660 part numbers are different.
If you go to each units accessories>mounts, you’ll see the different part numberss as well as physical differences.
The 760 is rectangular where the 660 is round.

How Would You Use an Audio Out Jack?

I suspect Garmin provides audio out jacks on their 7” RV and truck models due to the relatively noisy environments in these vehicles. Their large dashboards often require the GPSr to be mounted farther away from the operator and therefore more difficult to hear.

I’ve never used the audio jack on my RV760 and I’m not sure how I could practically do so. I doubt the audio power output on the RV760 is sufficient to drive a large external speaker. I suppose I could experiment with an adapter cable that would let me connect the GPS audio jack to the USB port in my truck which I occasionally use with my Ipad.

Since so many new vehicles these days are Bluetooth compatible, it seems to me a better approach would be to provide a Bluetooth audio streaming feature on the GPSr itself which would pair with the vehicle. Many GPSr’s already have the hands free smartphone Bluetooth link built in. Audio streaming shouldn’t be an expensive feature to add.

Garmin’s rugged old Nuvi 765T had A2DP audio streaming which could be used to stream turn by turn directions to a car stereo.

I’m not sure why Garmin chose not to incorporate this feature in their newer models.

Not being an RVer, I can only assume the following...

RV's likely have aftermarket head units installed for their audio systems. I'll bet a good amount of these have an audio-in jack which works just great for piping the audio out (line level) from the GPS to the head unit. Maybe even the factory installed head units would have an audio-out as well. The GPS doesn't need to drive a speaker, just the audio-in (line-level) to the head unit. The head unit itself does the amplifying and output to the RV's speaker system. So in a loud RV environment, you can have as much audio volume as you need while navigating

Mixing.

I have used my older nuvi's (755T and 855) audio output plugged into my car's line input jack, and it worked just great. The problem is that my head unit does not allow mixing of inputs, so when you enable the line-in, it cuts out the radio, CD player, etc. There is no way to mix the navigation prompts with another source. That is why the MP3 and audiobook players on those old nuvi's was so useful. It allowed listening to music or books, which would be interrupted by the navigation prompts when necessary.

So just having the audio out jack without an MP3 player wouldn't be all that useful to me. Maybe in a noisy truck/RV it would though, so I can see why they include it on those models. Still, it seems like they should also include a MP3 player.
