Updating my two Nuvi's

After numerous problems with the 3790 on my 3,000 mile drive home I decided to do a factory reset to see if that would eliminate these problems. The map would all of a sudden disappear to the voice command screen. The command had been changed a long time ago to "Wake up dummy" to lessen any radio interference. The map would for some reason zoom out so far it was useless. A few other inexplicable errors as well. Some of these would happen at the most inopportune times!

As always, I do a complete backup of the GPS before any updates etc. Also backed up my trusty old 855 to update to the 2015.40 map.

Following the instructions on POIfactory to reset the 3790 to the letter I found that, Yes, I had to reset the Nuvi almost like it came out of the box. But the reset did NOT remove any favorites or custom POI's. Thought that was strange.

The mapupdate on the 3790 worked well, albeit slow! After the update I did notice one immediate difference. Living in a townhouse complex even the roads in the complex were on the new 2015.40 map. Also it seems to me the volume level has been boosted since now at 40% I get the same volume as almost 100% previously. It installed a JCV file of about 400kb. This only gives me a split screen junction view.

Is the larger JCV file available?

The 855 was a different story altogether. After the message that there is not enough room to install I had to search for the install to a SD card POIfactory forum instructions. Followed these instructions to install to the SD card.
I also deleted the old 2015.2 map file in the 855 and substituted it with a tiny file renamed to the same file name now giving me some breathing space in the 855.

Will I be able to use the 400kb JCV file in the 855? In the past I was able to use the large JCV file.

JCV files

The "large" JCV file for the 2015.40 map update is no longer being made available from Garmin to the best of our knowledge. My best guess is that it'll never be offered with future map updates but I hope to be proven wrong. The only way to get the large JCV is from someone who still receives it with map updates; e.g., a nuvi 765 owner, or from some questionable web sites.

The nuvi 855 can not use the split-screen JCV file from your 3790 so we 855 owners will either need to accept living with the tiny JCV file provided with the map update from Garmin or from one of the above sources.

Given the age of the 8x5 series, I'm no longer as annoyed at the loss of the large JCV file mostly because my 3597 is my standard GPS and a 2460 serves as a backup. My 855 is now my backup's backup device.

It does sound like you're one of the small percentage of Garmin users who prefers the large full-screen JV on your split-screen device. For folks wanting the full-screen JV who are willing to download the large file and replace the 400KB-ish split screen file, the loss of availability of the large file is much more of an annoyance.

That is strange!

A Master Reset should delete Favorites/Saved Places.

A Master Reset will not impact Custom POIs.

So, I have to wonder if your "Favorites" came back because you have on your device some ".gpx" file other than "current.gpx".

Would you please check this and let us know?

Works fine now

I'm sure that I followed the instructions by DorkusNimrod to a tee. But then I have old age going for/against me too.
Only having used the 3790 in town since and I'm happy with it so far. Not planning any longer trips for a while to see what will happen then.
Thank you J.
