Nuvi 710

Hi everybody, I have a Nuvi 710 and I have the following problems that seems to be unsolvable, firstly, my GPS`s time is a hour in advance, the time zone is correct, but the time is out. Secondly, I need to download routs from Google Earth to my GPS, but my PC don`t “see” my GPS, I have to get my GPS unit set to Host or Garmin in order for my PC to “see” my GPS, but I cannot get to the section where I have to do the adjustments. Is there anybody that can help me please? I have contacted Garmin in Capetown, but they send me the link to a video how to reset my GPS and I don`t want to reset it and lose all my saved info on it as I cannot save it to my PC first.

Daylight Savings Time

For the time difference, I would check the setting for Daylight Savings time. It should be, Tools -> Settings -> Time

For South Africa since it doesn't have daylight savings time, it should be Off or Auto.

For the other issues, what type of computer and OS are you using?

You can try a different USB port on the computer. Garmin also recommends have the cable unplugged, and the GPS off, then plug it in to the GPS and computer.

Do you have a large number of mapped network drives?

Also Try

In addition to trying a different USB port on your computer as jfossy suggests, also try using a different USB cable.

Make sure the battery is fully charged and allow your 710 to boot and acquire satellites. This could take a while if the unit has moved a significant distance from the last place it was used.

Once the unit boots, you should be able to use the tools menu to change to Host or Garmin mode. Back up your data and if necessary, do a factory reset.

USB hub

If you are using a USB hub, move the nuvi to a USB port on the back of the computer itself.

mac or PC?

Are you running a Mac or PC?

Nuvi 710

Thanks jfossy, the time one worked for me, unfortunately I have done the rest, different UBS ports (front and back)and all, but no luck. I run a P5 Quad core 6600 and my OS is Windows XP pro and no I don`t have large number of mapped network drives. I also went thru the whole tools menu and there is no place where I can set it for Host nor Garmin. My GPS worked well with no problems until I took it to Garmin to have my bluetooth repaired, they went and reset my GPS and from there on my PC cannot "see" my GPS, so whatever they did, it does not work for me and they recon they cannot set it and that I have to do a hard reset, but I cannot backup my GPS to my PC.

Nuvi 710

Hi dobs108, I have a PC, not Mac, Intel processor.

garmin communicator

Garmin Communicator is a web browser plugin that you get for free from the Garmin site. It works with all browsers except Chrome. If you are running Chrome, use Internet Explorer to do this. Connect the 710 to the computer and go to this page -

http://software.garmin.com/en-US/gcp.html

Garmin Communicator will run automatically and it will "check for devices." Most likely, it will find the 710. If it does not, click on the "Don't see your device?" link. Click on the "Search for devices" button. There is a link for the latest version of Garmin "USB driver software."

Since you are running Windows XP, it is more likely that USB drivers would be an issue. I hope that you have downloaded the latest updates from Windows Update before they discontinued this support last year.

Nuvi 710

Thanks dobs, I have installed and run the Garmin Communicator, but my PC still does not see my GPS, it cannot find my device. I have just spoken to a gentleman and he told me that I have to get into the device software to set the interface option to host or Garmin, but he don`t know how get there, I have also attempted to access the device via MapSource, but the program advice me to set it to host or Garmin as it cannot detect my device. So, I have to get somebody that knows how to get into the software of this GPS. I beleave there was a gentleman that used to work for Cape Union Mart in Vredenburg on the west coast that knew how to do it but he is not there anymore.
Yes, I have updated my system before they discontinued the support for XP.

Don't think so.

That may have been a setting on some older Garmin devices, but I don't believe the 7x0 nuvi series has that option. It should just mount as a mass storage devoce when you plug it in to USB. If that is not happening, something is wrong (cable, computer, USB drivers, USB port on nuvi, etc.). The first thing I would try is a different computer ... maybe you can try it on a friend's computer that has Windows 7.

If I remember, the 710 was a Europe model, not sold in the US, but is similar to and the same generation as the nuvi 750/760.

Drivers

Nuvi 710

Thanks guys, but have attempted it by plugging it in on my wife's laptop with the same results, I have also updated all my drivers, so, I have no idea how to get into the device-es software as I was assured that is where I have to be to set the interface option to the correct setting. Yes my GPS in an old one +/- 8 years, but it work very well on my PC until I had it at Garmin for the bluetooth problem, now its not grand anymore and they don`t have anybody there to fix the problem, according to Garmin, they could not even repair the bluetooth and want to sell me a new GPS. I am not very impressed with them at this stage.

Master reset.

I know you said you don't want to do a master reset and lose your saved data. But it sounds like you have tried all the other options, so that may be the only choice you have left. Unfortunately, there is no gaurantee that will fix the problem, so you may lose your data and still have no connectivity. You will need to assess the risk and decide.

One thing you could do (just for grins) is look at the diagnostics screens to see if anything there looks odd. You get to that screen by pressing and holding the battery icon (or where the battery icon is normally displayed on the Where To menu).

The other thing I can think of is to delete everthing you don't need through the nuvi menu system. In particular, delete the trip log. This will reduce the size of the current.gpx file and may give you slightly more free space. Sometimes when you are short on free space, the nuvi does not fully complete the boot cycle, and this can cause various failures.

Host Mode?

I don't believe any Nuvi has the interface options of changing to host mode. Looking at the 710's manual I see nothing mentioned there. I believe this feature is present in some of the hand held GPS's.

Are you using the USB cable that came with your 710?
I know you said it was working before your blue tooth attempted repair but it's possible your Garmin USB cable is bad.

When you attach it to your car does it boot up and work properly?

Since you must be able to have your PC recognize your 710 for file maintenance I think alandb's suggestions is a viable option even though you'll lose your favoites on a master reset.

We can't stress enough on this forum to always have a backup of your GPS, it will spare you the aggravation you now face.
