Refurb Garmin Nuvi 2757LM or Nexus with CamSam?

I can get a 2757LM for 179.95 or I can get a Refurb Nexus 7 for 79.95.

The advantage of the Nexus7 is obviously that it can be used for many things in addition to a GPS.

I am trying to justify spending the extra $100 for the Garmin.

Why would you choose the Garmin over the Nexus7? The only down side I can see for the Nexus is in the mounting, it does not seem to have an inexpensive quality mount.

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

not the same as a nuvi

No matter what software you can run on the tablet, it is nothing like the Garmin nuvi in being dedicated to its purpose.

Does that Nexus require cell tower data for its GPS coordinates,

or does it get its location from overhead sat systems? If it is the former, then there have been many discussions of cell phone vs Sat Nav systems & instruments. And what about POI, off-grid routing, LMT?

BTW which Nexus model are you considering?

Need to do very well vs Like to do very well

One device designed to do one thing very well

versus

One device designed to do multiple things in a mediocre fashion.

Nexus 7 and it has a built-in GPS receiver.

other costs

The Garmin will use your existing mounting systems, the Nexus will require new ones.

Very true

True, I have my beanbag mount for the Nuvi 350 and it seems that it is hard to find a quality mount for the Nexus at reasonable price.

I think it will be the Nexus 7

I just spent most of the day driving in parts of Brooklyn that I have not been to in 40 years. I used my cell phone and Google Maps. I have to congratulate Google for how the Mobile Map App has been improved to a level that I count not have imagined a few years ago.

I am sure that for me the best way to go is the Nexus 7. I rely 98% of the time on the voice prompts and not the visual map. The voice prompts were outstanding. It told me which lanes to be in to make turns.

I cant imagine that the Nuvi could do any better for driving directions.

I could also use Waze. Granted red light and speed cameras on Waze might not be a complete as the POI Factory download but I do not rely on that very much now.

It's your choice, but comparing what's available on your cell to your 350 is an unfair comparison. The newer Garmins with their improved directions are truly light years away from what is found in the 350 and then of course there is the size differential as well.

I have a Nexus 7 and a Nuvi 2450

I love them both and before I got my Note 4 and Honda built in, I used the Nexus 7 for local everywhere we went in town and nearby. BUT, and this is a big BUT, when you want to make a route the Nuvi is far superior. If while on the route you need to find something near by or far away the Nuvi is much better.

I still use my Nuvi 2450 over all three of my other devices if we are going on a trip. It does so much more.

When you say Mobile Map App are you talking about the app by Google that is just called Maps in the Google Market ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.google.and... )?

If so it certainly is a decent app but I have not found it suitable as a GPS navigation app. Maybe I'm missing something, but I thought that I would ask in case you are using something else. About the only disadvantage that I see in using an Android tablet over a dedicated GPS is that there are so many options for software and many of them come up short in some ways (ways that many advocates of the software miss or choose to ignore). I'm personally using and very happy with Mapfactor, ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapfactor.... ) but always willing to look at other options.

Yes it is Google Maps

Yes I was using Google Maps, however it is not quite the same as the Google Maps that is on a Windows desktop computer. That is why I called it as I did.

Nexus 7 and Here

I have installed the Nokia Here maps for the USA.
I have used the N7 and Here a few times in Queens NY
So far I don't have any complaints. I am considering downloading CamSam for the red light and speed camera poi's.

I was hoping to get some opinions from anyone using CamSam.
Anyone on the forum using CanSam?
