Deleteing Second Map

In the past, I have usually used Map Updater and set the option to load on the Computer and Device. I also only loaded Canada and the lower 49 States.

I ran into a glitch, this time when the process froze at the stage prior to loading the maps onto the Device.

I downloaded the maps a second time and downloaded to Computer Only and used Map Install, to load to my NUVI 2555LMT. I also inadvertantly downloaded the full NA maps which included Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. That works out fine, since I have a cruise planned that includes the Caribbean.

However, I now show the basic North American Maps, 2015.20 plus NA with the Other States and Caribbean 2015.30.

Whats the best way to delete the 2015.20 NA Maps. I have checked 2015.30 and Unchecked 2015.20 and I have plenty of room on my SD card, but I would like to get it removed.

My concern.

My concern with the process you used is with the JCV file. With mismatched versions and the fact that you loaded part of your map content with MapInstall, you may lose junction view support if you delete the old maps. Also, I don't know if your model has voice recognition, but if it does, you may lose that capability.

What I would probably do is start out with an empty SD card and reinstall the full map to SD using the cloning method with either MapUpdater or Garmin Express. After you have disabled the maps in internal memory and tested the map on the SD card to make sure everything is working OK, you can delete the maps in internal storage. Then you can check free space to see if you have room to move the new maps from the SD back to internal storage. If not, just run with it using the maps on SD.

Check your files

When loaded directly with Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater, the map will be called gmapprom.img and when updating to a new map update, the old gmapprom.img will be deleted and the new gmapprom.img will replace it.

When using MapInstall to create a map from a map on your computer, the map made will be a supplemental map. Over time, supplemental maps have had a required name or can be named almost anything and this depends on the nuvi model you have. Most likely, the supplemental map made with be gmapsupp.img. Note that any supplemental map will stay on your device unless/until you manually go to the folders in your nuvi, find the supplemental map and delete it. When deciding what file is what map, filesize and the file date may offer some help. Rather than guessing and deleting the wrong map, I suggest renaming a map file first; i.e., if you think your gmapsupp.img is the file you want to delete, first rename it gmapsupp.img.disabled. Then power up the nuvi and see if the map you intended to remove is gone. If so, go back and delete the gmapsupp.img.disabled. If not, remove the .disabled and add the .disabled to a different .img map file. All maps end in .img. Do not tinker with the gmapbmap.img, tz.img, or other .img file as you will risk losing your basemap, time zone map, various 3D maps, etc.

As always, before renaming to deleting files, have a full nuvi backup of all files on your computer or somewhere else.

If this doesn't make 100% sense, get a clarification before you start tinkering.

Last bit of advice: The nuvi 2555 is either a 4 or 8GB device, and the 2555 is offered the update-to-SD option if a map update will not fit on the device. I would personally suggest not using MapInstall ever for this model since, as already pointed out, there could be problems with Junction View or Voice Recognition, and also because the use of MapInstall creates Supplemental Maps that are not auto-deleted when performing later updates and this could come back to bite you down the road.

garmin express

GPSgeek, you have been helped by the two foremost experts at POI Factory. It seems they are recommending Garmin Express.

you might be right.

GE has been finally getting good reviews and it might be the answer.

have trip planned. best to wait until I'm back

alandb and Craigw have good suggestions and I value the help. However, if I have any trouble with 2015.3, I'll uncheck it and check 2015.2.

I'll sort through everything when I come back from my trip to Florida and the cruise. Better safe than sorry.

Putting the whole map on was a goof on my part. I'll let you know how I make out, after I get it sorted. Thanks again.

Another Suggestion

If using MapUpdater to download the map and save it also to PC, check the box that shows leave files (or similar) on the PC. This will leave the correct Junction View and ASR files (Voice Files) for that map version on your PC you just downloaded. You then can move the Junction View file to an SD card to save space. The Voice files MUST be on the Nuvi and will not work on an SD card.

Be sure to delete the old Junction View file from internal memory since it may not be compatible with the map you will be using.

I See The Issues

I have found a subdirectory on the SD Card called Maps. It has two .gma file and one file called City Navigator North America 2015.3.img. The img file will be the file created by Map Install.

The gma file are both dated the same date and time.

When I look at the Internal Storage of the 2555 I can find no map files listed at all, despite the fact that all but about 3 Mb of the 4 Gb of memory is used. I have my properties set to show hidden files and subdirectories, but I cannot see them.

I do have 5 Gb left on my SD Card.

You were both right as far as not being able to see Junction View, in the new map, that was installed with MapInstall.

Junction View still works with the old map.

I will make my trip using the old map, since it is only one update short of the current version.

Once I come back, I will do as you suggest and delete the new map, and use GE or MapUpdater to install. I might also consider the cloning method.

Hidden files and folders

The most likely reason for not finding map files on the nuvi is that there aren't any - they are on the SD card. But it is possible for some folders on the PC to have different properties than the global setting. The folder that is the nuvi should have a hidden folder called .System in the root of the nuvi (for newer units only). The maps are in the .System folder.

Before accessing the internal folders of the nuvi, make a full backup as Jgermann says. A backup using Garmin Express is not sufficient. See Jgermann's FAQ:

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/30394

If the .System folder is not visible, change the settings for the nuvi folder. You need to be the administrator of the PC. In Windows 7, on the left side of the menu bar, click on the Organize drop down menu. Choose Folder and Search Options. Click on the View tab. Click the radio button, Show Hidden Files, Folders, and Drives. Click Apply and OK. The .System folder should now be visible.

"Not Seeing .System Folder" is also a posted FAQ from Jgermann:

http://www.poi-factory.com/garmin/problemsolver#system-folde...

Remember alandb's comments above. Please do not delete or even rename any files, especially before your trip. Since you have an SD card there should be plenty of room for trash - just leave it there.

Mass Storage Device Mode

My NUVI is in MTP mode and I did some searches in POI Factory and found charlesd45's FAQ about putting into Mass Storage Device Mode.

I think I will try this when I return near the end of April. The GPS is working fine at this point and I leave in two weeks. The last thing I need is to crash the thing, and then have to go into panic mode.

However, all that being said, it could be a great excuse to buy a better unit. LOL Actually, I'm very happy with the 2555, so I really don't want to buy another.

I might screw up my courage and try the latest GE. It must be working, because I haven't seen the usual GE bashing for some time.

Cloning

If you follow the cloning methodology carefully (including the backup recommendation), there is very little risk in damaging your device or not being able to restore it to its previous condition. Most of the install/testing is done with a SD card, which can simply be removed and replaced with the original to get your nuvi back in its original condition. The one exception to this is the voice recognition files which would need to be copied back to the unit from the backup.

That said, your reluctance to mess with a working unit prior to a major trip is wise.
