I would suggest you put the map update on the card. The Nuvi will work fine if the maps are properly installed there.

The only thing I can think of is to put the Junction View file on the SD card and remove any unwanted Voice files from the Nuvi to free up space for future updates.

I'm sure you will run out of space soon on the internal memory since the Nuvi 50 is reported to have only 1.76 GB memory. Maybe it's best to put map on the SD card as t923347 suggested.

Also not sure what map you have since according to Garmin the 50LM has two versions, Quote from Garmin,
"It comes in 2 mapping versions and has preloaded maps for the lower 49 states plus Puerto Rico, or full coverage of the U.S. and Canada".

Like others have said, use the microSD card to put the full map on there. There isn't enough internal memory on the 50LM to load the full 2015.30 map set. Instead it defaults to installing a portion of the maps. In a family member's case they installed the east coast map set on their 50LM. Garmin explains it in some detail at the following link:

To save you some effort and possible file name/folder issues, etc., I suggest you use the nuvi 50LM as it is now assuming you have the latest map. As always, before tinkering with files in a nuvi, have a full backup of all files stored if you find you need something you deleted.

Is your 50LM the Lower 48-state or the US/Canada version?

When the next map update comes out (maybe in February), the map updater (Garmin Express or GarminMapUpdater) will offer you the option to install the map on a SD card if the full map won't fit on your GPS. Choose that option and the update will install the map to the SD card, delete the older map version on nuvi itself and all the files that need to be deleted, renamed, installed, etc. will be taken care of and placed in the proper folders. If you don't have the current 2015.30 map, you're ready to update now, then again in 1-2 months when 2015.40 arrives.

The other option to update a map to a SD card is to use the "clone" method. Check the faqs for the procedure. Simply moving the map (the various gmapprom.* files to the SD card) may not work due to folder requirements and file name issues.

once again thx to knowledgeable members here . she does have latest map and I will wait . sd card formatted and installed in garmin . after reading other peoples experience doing this , I will wait plus do more research . I did download basecamp and others while doing said research . thx again.
