Any security features available for the 65LM?

The new Garmins have a great security feature. They no longer dupe you into thinking there is any security in setting a PIN code. It turns out that these codes never prevented someone from smashing an expensive window and snatching a GPS receiver, they just made the GPS receiver harder to use afterward (and somewhat harder to use while you still owned it). And they gave people a false sense of security that encouraged them to leave the GPS receiver in their car.

Newer Garmins don't try to fool the user into thinking that there is any security in setting a PIN code. Thus they make more obvious another security feature (one that was there on older models but often obscured by the PIN code), the ability to take your GPS receiver with you when you exit the car.

I've seen plenty of posts about stolen GPS receivers, even ones where the owner expected the device to be stolen so he cleverly "hid" it in the console or under the seat where a thief would never look. PIN codes didn't prevent these. And I have not yet seen one report where the thief returned later, broke the replacement window, and returned the GPS receiver and left a note saying "You win. Here is your GPS back. I couldn't get past the PIN code."

With fewer drivers fumbling with entering pointless PIN codes into their GPS receivers while driving, I feel just a little safer. Thank you Garmin for removing this useless threat to public safety.

Garmin has abandoned this feature on all newer models. Since the Garmin nuvi is a closed system, you will not find an "add-on" for this function.
