Lifetime Garmin NuMaps $39.99

I didn't see this posted, so here goes...Garmin is offering the North America NuMaps Lifetime for only $39.99. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/prod33379.html

If you ever wanted to get a subscription for a device, this is the cheapest I have ever seen this.

.

If I had a device that didn't already have Lifetime updates, I'd jump on this. Great deal! Thanks for sharing!

Question

I have a question about this deal.

Garmin states "This product only can be used to update the preloaded maps that came installed on your device. For example, a device preloaded with North America maps cannot be updated with nüMaps Lifetime Europe, and vice versa."

The link for the map shows full coverage of North America (includes Mexico). If the preloaded maps on the Nuvi are only lower 49 states will it download only the Lower 49?

I ask this because these after market map updates will not contain files needed for Junction Views, Voice Command, and other unit specific files for various models.

I believe so. And usually, these lower memory devices (~1/2 the memory) don't have the required space even if the full map was offered when updating. I don't thing Garmin would be giving freebies out.

Those units with the 2GB memory in most cases are already updating their maps to SD cards for lack of room, so space should not be a requirement. I realize no freebies but what they're selling for the 39.99 is the Full North America map.
I believe, but I'm not sure, that the only way you can get all the required files for all features is to buy a Nuvi with lifetime updates included.

Agree

In the fineprint of Lifetime Maps Terms & Conditions it clearly states:

"If you purchase a nüMaps Lifetime subscription (sold separately) or if your Garmin product comes bundled with a nüMaps Lifetime or other lifetime map subscription, you will receive map data updates when and as such updates are made available on Garmin.com during the useful life of 1 compatible Garmin product or as long as Garmin receives map data from a third party supplier, whichever is shorter. A product’s “useful life” means the period during which the product (a) has sufficient memory capacity and other required technical capabilities to utilize current map data and (b) is capable of operating as intended without major repairs. A product will be deemed to be out of service and its useful life to be ended if no updates have been downloaded for such product for a period of 24 months or more. Unless otherwise stated, the updates you receive under the subscription will be updates to the same geographic area included with your Garmin product when originally purchased. In some instances, your Garmin product might not have sufficient memory remaining for you to load an update to the map data, in which case you will need to either (a) select reduced map data coverage for your updates, or (b) purchase separately a microSD™/SD™ card (if and as applicable to your Garmin product) and load all or a portion of the map data coverage for your updates to the card and insert the card into the microSD/SD card slot contained in your Garmin product. If neither of the measures in (a) or (b) can be used to address your product’s lack of sufficient remaining memory, then Garmin may conclude that the “useful life” of your product has expired. Garmin may terminate your nüMaps Lifetime or other lifetime map subscription at any time if you violate any of the terms of this agreement or your subscription. Your nüMaps Lifetime subscription or other lifetime map subscription may not be transferred to another person or another Garmin product."

nüMaps at that price is really an excellent deal grin

Lifetime map update card

I am not sure if I understand this statement, but in my case, I bought the lifetime update subscription (card) for both my nuvi 755T and nuvi 855. Neither of these untis came with lifetime updates. I have not lost any features. On the 755T, with a map update I get the Junction View file, the 3D buildings and sometimes a new Time Zone map. On the 855 I get the Junction view file although I separately download the full coverage JCV file. I also get the 855 voice recognition files with the map update.

Thanks for clarifying. I was under the impression when buying the lifetime updates either on a download or an SD card they did not include all the files for all features. Although the map is the same, various models have different features and require distinct files to run those features. Garmin cannot possibly have numerous download files or SD cards for specific Nuvi models.

The only thing I can think of is when you do a map update, it confirms you have lifetime maps, then identifies your model, and installs the necessary files for that particular Nuvi.

Garmin states in the microSD™/SD™ card Requirements section & DVD Requirements section the following :

Please note, these full-version maps do not contain premium content such as junction view or 3-D buildings and terrain. These features only are available on the preloaded maps within your device or through a specific update for the mapping region of your device.

In the download requirements section the above isn't written therefore if you update via download the junction views, 3-D buildings and terrain will be included and updated.

https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/maps/on-the-road-maps/city-n...

So that confirms the only way to receive full features is by DOWNLOAD ONLY. This is a good deal for sure for those with older units or newer Nuvi's purchased without Lifetime Updates

@ muell9k

You quoted me before I was able to delete that post because after searching a little more I'm not not able to confirm that at 100%.

I still believe that the premium content can only be updated via a download and not if you buy an SD card or DVD.

Added coverage.

@Canuk ... I think you don't get the added features if you purchase additional coverage in any format. For example if you have a North America nuvi and purchase the Europe map (DVD, download or SD card), you will not have JCV, voice recognition, etc for the added continent. And if you then add a lifetime update subscription to that added coverage, you still will not get these premium features. You only get the premium features on the map coverage your unit came with.

Added coverage udate when doing a map DOWNLOAD

alandb wrote:

I agree, my 255W won't get the junction view as it wasn't included from the time of purchase.

What I do believe is that the junction view and other premium features are updated with the devices that originally had this at the time of purchase ONLY through a download update and not an SD or DVD purchase.

Deal ends today

This deal ends today December 3, so get it while you can. There seems to be some confusion in the discussion, so this is a lifetime subscription for the full North America maps. Older GPS units will require a SD card to fit the entire mapset, and older units without removable memory like StreetPilot would have to download maps to a program like Mapsource or BaseCamp and only upload regions as memory allows.

This is not just an update, this is a subscription to the North America mapset licensed to your GPS device.

No GPS that did not include Junction View, Lane Assist, speed limits, school zones and other features can display those; however the new Lifetime Maps will support all those features if your device does.

Good price

I know when I had my 855 I paid $79 for lifetime updates.

I have an "ancient" 260 that did not come with lifetime update. I purchased one in a later date for ~$90.

The 260 came with map of US and Canada. When I update the map (with Garmin Map Updater), it indicates that it is going to update only US & Canada as expected. If I select "View Options", I am, however, presented "full North America" as one of the available options. I downloaded it. And the map is functional on the 260. It indeed does included Mexico and all the other regions in addition to Canada and US. smile

I more confused now then ever. I was going to ask you if junction view was downloaded but I see from the Garmin Specs your 260 doesn't have junction view.
What really surprised me is Garmin also indicates that the 260 doesn't have Lane Assist. I think that is another Garmin typo (again).

Yes, I agree with muell9k that this is surprising based on what the Garmin policy says and what has been reported in past posts. That said, it has been reported on Garmin's software forums for some time that this policy worked differently in Europe. For example, it was reported that you could buy a nuvi with UK maps only and no lifetime update, then buy the Europe lifetime map subscription and install the update for all of Europe. I know when this was first reported, the same did not work in North America. But maybe Garmin has quietly extended this same policy change to NA. It would be interesting to know if someone who has a "lower 49 only nuvi" without a bundled lifetime subscription can add the lifetime map subscription and install the full NA.

The sale ended on 12/3 at 11:59 PM CST.

My nuvi 205

I don't know if this helps but I have a Nuvi 205 that I bought in 2009. It was a lower 49 state model. I bought full NA lifetime maps in 2011 but it always install the lower 49 due to the limited memory of the 205.

Recently, tried installing a 2gb SD card but it would not install the full map due to needing 2.2gb of space. I have purchased an 8gb card and was able to installed the full NA 2015.30 map without any difficulties. I can see Mexico, Alaska and Canada now. grin

Lifetime map update to expand coverage.

@Jdove: Thanks for reporting that. Perhaps this does indicate that Garmin has relaxed the policy in North America as they apparently have in Europe. Hopefully other members with limited NA coverage and lifetime updates will try this and confirm your results.

I suspect this may only apply if you purchased the lifetime map subscription separately. If your nuvi came with the lower 49 and a lifetime subscription, my guess is that Garmin will still restrict the update to the region your nuvi came with.

another option

sometimes it is better to buy a newer unit which is faster and better and there are enough sales to buy Garmin GPS for $99 or less on sale may be a better option.

agreed

Given the cost of new units with lifetime maps, I agree with what african says. Unless you have a legacy unit that you can't bear to part with, it doesn't make sense any more to pay close to a hundred bucks for map updates. The cost of the subscription is close the cost of a new unit with lifetime maps.

.

Back when I purchased my lifetime maps I don't think they offered lifetime on new units so paying $99 back then was a good deal for me considering the many many updates I received so far and continue to receive.

I'm happy and my old 350 has no signs of slowing down.

I've got a 350...

...and the last time I updated the maps on it was three years ago. I believe I paid $49.95 when I updated it last. I refused to update the maps since I had purchased a newer unit and I didn't feel like paying the price for map updates on this unit. However, when I saw this price I jumped on it. The 350 is now showing the new roads in my area and I am now using it for work purposes. Great deal on map updates.
