I have connected my Garmin 255W to my PC in the past with no problem. This time I connected the Garmin-to-PC cable and I got the twotone bleep as always. But when I start the POI Loader and it gets to the screen with the device list, the Garmin device is not in the drop-down list, only the Removable Disks. I disconnected and reconnected the cable and turned the Garmin on and off. It still can't find it. The unit works fine on the road. Any ideas?
I done a search on Garmin
I done a search on Garmin support and found this.It applies to Poiloader version 2.5.2.0
Why does the POI Loader not see my device?
Answer:
The POI Loader for Windows® software version 2.5.2.0 has a known issue seeing some mass storage devices. Some examples of mass storage units are nüvi® units and zumo® units. This issue occurs on a select number of Garmin devices. Typically when this specific error occurs the Garmin device will not be seen by the POI Loader but it will be seen by all other Garmin applications.
Please Note: This procedure should only be required for the 2.5.2.0 version of POI Loader. To determine which version of POI Loader you have installed
Launch the POI Loader Application
Click on the icon in the upper left corner
Click "About POI Loader"
The version that you currently have installed will be displayed. You can also check for updates by Clicking the "Check for Software Updates" from this menu described in Step 2
To correct the issue you can either back date the POI Loader to a prior version or you can follow the steps below.
Plug your Garmin device in
Click Start and then My Computer / Computer
Click on the nüvi® or Garmin device
Click the Garmin folder
In the Garmin folder you will see a file named Garmindevice.xml delete this file
Close the window and launch the POI loader
The Garmin device should now be seen by the POI Loader.

I have 2.5.4
Actually, I am using 2.5.4. I also tried an older 2.5.3, just in case. I never did use the 2.5.2 that the text seems to refer.
Since my post, I also rebooted my machine from power down, and I loaded some photos through the same USB port that the POI Loader cannot load. Does this sound like a hardware failure on my Garmin? I've only got about 10 hours on it.
Gotta travel on ... with my nuvi 2450LM.
Have you tried

Have you tried the same cable with other devices? It's a standard miniusb so any cable will work. I've got 3 or 4 and I just use whatever is in the drawer.

Try as A_User says another cable AND try it in a different USB port.

I installed the program and
I installed the program and it installed into a different place. I unknowingly had 2 versions installed at the same time. When I made sure I was running version 273 the "device not seen" problem went away. I figured out which one was the right exe file by looking at the file version. I had a version 253 that had the problem and the version 273 that worked ok.

Wow, that brings back memories. Yes, about two or more years ago Garmin started installing POI Loader updates to a different location on PCs without removing the older version folder, files, etc. It created quite a stir for at least a couple of reasons.
I'm glad you got it sorted out.
