Can I change the alerts to work better?

Nuvi 650.

Downloaded and installed red light camera POI. Works okm but....

1. The alert tone (a gentle 'bong, bong') is akin to elevator doors opening. Can I somehow change the alert tone to something more... agressive?

2. I have mute on, so that I am not constantly bothered by the 'turn here, turn there' prompts. But then I don't hear any alerts! Is there a way to have alerts override the mute function?

By the way - my first GPS, and it's great!

You can change the alert to and use any MP3 file if you name it exactly the same name as the csv file except of course for the file type extension. Then place it in the same folder as your csv file and Garmin's POI loader will do the rest. Note:this also works for the bmp icons for locations.

I don't know of any way to overide mute, but someone more knowledgeable will be along soon I'm sure.

An unusual request!

"Bothered"? - this is one of its main features :-)

Anyway, you could probably achieve what you want by modifying the volume settings in one of the unused (foreign language) TTS voice files, rather than using "Mute".

Using a 'hex editor', search for the string: "voice_volume" and you'll find something like: <voice_volume>65</voice_volume>
If you alter the "65" (for example) to "00", the voice prompts will be inaudible.

You may have to use this in conjunction with supplying a separate .mp3 file for the actual alerts - I'm not sure if the it affects the "Bong" "Bong" volume or not.

You can also change the displayed name of your modified voice file, to remind yourself what it does...search for <screen_name> and change (for example)

<screen_name>Australian English Karen (TTS)</screen_name>
to
<screen_name>Voice alerts disabled         </screen_name>

PS.
If you don't currently have any unused TTS voices, run the WebUpdater and it will offer to download some for you. You will then find them in the \Garmin\Voice directory. The file names are self-explanatory.

Interesting idea....

OK, I like the concept of that hack! I may give that a shot when I have the time.

As to being bothered - it's one thing to be reminded to take your exit on the freeway, it's another thing to drive around Phoenix and be interrupted constantly when you are trying to talk to someone or listen to the radio.

Would be nice to see 'mute' and a 'mute all prompts except alerts' options.

Might also be nice to have some sort of bluetooth 'send mild electric shock to the steering wheel when approaching speed trap alert'.

Two suggestions

One,
remove the poi's.

two,
Check your manual's index, Changing the Proximity Points Settings - page 30

Custom voices

You can buy a custom voice for the Garmin that has "No voice". That way you don't hear the directions prompts but will still get alerts messages, listen to mp3's ], etc. They cost around $10 or so, and you don't have to mess with hacks. Just google "custom garmin voices"

You might want to swap the English_British and American_English actions if you are in the US.

On page 9 post Mon Mar 24, 2008 9:15 pm
he advises that "after the first fifty (50) they will have reduced sound quality"
However I can't imagine that would affect silence

dreadful idea

Dear Canoe,

I live in Brooklyn (New York City). I cannot fathom why I would want to swap those voices as a result of my residence.

Actions not Voices

I suggested possibly swapping the ACTIONS - not the VOICES - ie. all British speech replaced with silence instead of the American.

The words are the same in both but the pronunciation is a bit different. The most striking is "sharply" sounds to me like "shoply" in the British version.

I have now had my tea and the light is dawning.

Dear Canoe,

Thank you; I now understand. I should have seen that. It may help that I have had most of my first cup of tea for the day (makes the synapses fire faster).

I apologise for the misreading.

Alerts

I don't know if your 650 has the same volume controls as my 760.
I have separate controls for Master, Navigation, and Media, with mutes for Master and Navigation.
When listening to MP3's I usually turn the navigation Volume down, because I usually have the MP3 volume up loud and I don't want the Navigation prompts to be as loud.

On my 760 I can access all volume controls from the MP3 player or tap tools/settings/volume.
