755 Lost Sound

We just returned from a trip in the Hill Country of Texas. On the way home, I noticed that I was not getting voice prompts for turns. Discovered of course when I missed a highway turn off!

Checked the volume and it was still set at 100%. Has anyone else experienced this type of problem? Is this fixable, or am I going to have to upgrade to the RV gps I have been looking at?

755

These may be possible causes:

1) In addition to the master volume control, the 755 has a mixer with separate sub-volume controls. Make sure that both the master and routing volume controls are set. See page 6:

http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac/2721_OwnersManual.pdf

I don't know what the "routing" subvolume control is called but it should be obvious when you are there.

2) I think it's also true that if your 755's FM transmitter is turned on, then all audio from the nuvi's speakers is muted. See pages 42-43 on the manual.

3) Although it shouldn't mute everything, you may want to check your Media Player's settings, Bluetooth settings, etc. It may also be a good idea to check your chosen Voice. Remember that some voice choices speak street names and other don't.

4) As a last resort, you could try resetting the device to its default conditions. First tap Tools/Settings/System/Restore (pages 44-50) and see what happens. Or reset the nuvi (page 51). Finally, if all else fails, try a hard reset:

Good luck—and ignore all of the above if you really want that new RV GPS you've been coveting. razz

?

Are you saying that you got NO Prompts; or are you saying that you did not get "street name" prompts?

since last update?

There was a map update a few quarters ago which nuked voice capability for a fair number of us.

If it is possible that you had voice up until an update, and not thereafter, some searching here might turn up what we did to recover (I don't remember). Seems to me it required either copying back onto the unit some files from personal backup, or it required running Garmin's WebUpdater and explicitly asking for voice files.

Even if your failure did not coincide with a map update, possibly one of those methods might help you recover if the trouble is not just a sound settings matter.

Nuvi 7xx Sound

Obvious things to check:

1. Audio level setting (already confirmed at 100%)
2. Audio not muted
3. FM transmitter not enabled

If the unit beeps when pressing functions and will play an audible MP3 audio file, then this indicates that the internal audio amplifier and internal speaker are working. The problem would then be limited to a voice guidance issue. Is a valid voice selected?

If the unit does not beep when pressing buttons and does not play an audible MP3 file, the problem could be:

1. Defective internal audio amplifier (very rare)
2. Defective internal speaker (more common)
3. Broken connection at the headphone jack (less common)

To check the speaker & headphone jack, plug a set of headphones into the headphone jack. If you now hear beeps, can hear a MP3 and voice guidance, then either the internal speaker or internal headphone jack are the cause.

In cases where a customer may use the headphone jack quite frequently (playing audio through the vehicle's stereo system), this puts wear on the jack and the electrical connections can come loose from the board.

The headphone jack is also an audio switch that switches out the speaker (disconnects it) when headphones are used.

If the headphone jack is used quite often, then the jack or its connections to the board could be the cause, shutting off the speaker. The rear (2) electrical connections on the headphone jack is for the audio switch.

It is normally closed when a headphone plug is NOT inserted. This allows audio from the audio amplifier to pass to the speaker. If those (2) connections break free from the board, no audio will be present at the speaker.

We've seen both broken headphone jacks and defective (open coils) speakers in the Nuvi 3x0, 6x0 and 7xx series.

If the headphone jack has seen little or no use, then a defective speaker is more likely the cause.

Checked all the obvious and settings are good. The unit does beep when making selections so the speaker is working. Valid voice is selected so I am assuming it is a software issue.

Try This

Have you tried selecting a different TTS voice, perhaps the one you have been using is corrupt.
Change the voice then reboot so a new GarninDevice.xml is created. If that doesn't work how about trying a hard reset.

Changed the TTS voice and rebooted..... Now I am getting the voice prompts! Do not understand how the voice file that I was usning, a standard Garmin, could be working just fine and then suddenly not work sad Oh well, as long as it keeps working I'm not going to worry about what happened. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Great news

That's great.

A good test now is to return to the previous voice file. If it causes the problem to recur, delete the file, then reinstall it with WebUpdater, myGarmin or Garmin Express.

So I guess there's no new RV760 in your immediate future... razz

Happy to hear the voice change worked for you. Do as CraigW suggested and try the original voice again to see if it works. If it does, it may have been an error in the GarminDevice.xml file.

Of it doesn't work I personaly would use WebUpdater to download that voice only again. After the download reboot the Nuvi. Let us know either way what the outcome is.

Sometimes stuff just happens for reasons unknown.

760

I have a 760 with sound problems as well. Perhaps I'll pull it out of the drawer, updated the maps, etc. and see if I can get sound from it again.
