Nuvi 650 bricked?

Can anybody give me some 'fix' suggestions? Unit powers on and boots up to the page telling me the maps are out of date, but touch screen won't allow the 'ok' click to continue, then screen goes dark. I tried the 'button' reset under the flip antenna, no luck. Suggestions?

Touch screen?

Assuming the battery has a full charge, it sounds like there's a touch screen issue you're experiencing. Check your serial number and see if you're on the list of 6xx units particularly susceptible to a failure:

http://www.sharc.net/gps_LCD_repair.htm

Look for the paragraph starting with:

Notice: we have observed a high rate of failures on a newer style 4.3 inch touchscreen (6xx series)...

Failure-prone serial numbers start with "12P"(some units) or "13N"or "14V" or "143" while those starting with "186" tend to be OK.

Try This:

If your symptoms exist when powering up the unit in a vehicle or by AC power, and you can connect your 650 to a computer, you might try the following “fix” offered by Garmin to an owner with a similar problem. Before proceeding, BACK UP YOUR DATA!

Quote from Garmin support:

“We are no longer replacing or repairing this model unit. However, let me give you some steps to try to calibrate the screen of your unit.
To recalibrate the touchscreen on your nuvi 600 series device please follow the steps below:

1. Plug the device into the computer via USB data cable
2. Double click My Computer (Mac Users can skip this step)
3. Double Click the Garmin or nuvi drive
4. Double click the Garmin folder
5. Delete the GUPDATE.GCD file (if this file is not on the device please skip to the next step)
6. Unplug the GPS device from the computer
7. Power the device off
8. Press and hold the Power button
9. After a short period a screen should appear that says Touch Dot
10. Release the Power button
11. Touch the dots as they move around the screen.

Your touchscreen should now be recalibrated.

If the screen is still not responding, then the unit will need to be replaced with a new unit at this time.”

End quote

If this procedure fails, the problem is likely a defective touch screen as CraigW suggests.

If you intend to keep the unit for the reason you bought it for then use this service to repair the touch screen. They repaired my Nuvi 660. it continues to work flawlessly.
I am a thoroughly satisfied customer.

Sharcnet--

Very good service if you need repair

BUT -- the 650 (as with my 680) is getting pretty long in the tooth -- it doesn't have enough memory for the modern map distros. If you haven't replaced the battery, you're overdue. As well, the screen seems to have gotten smaller; or maybe I've grown older and prefer a larger screen nowadays...

You can find refurb units on eBay with larger screens and more internal memory for not a lot of money.

Yeah, I know, your 650 is like a favorite pair of old shoes -- that was my 680 -- but sooner or later...

Faster

It would probably be faster contacting Jim directly if you send him a PM from his profile on this site.

Contact Garmin

My Nuvi locked up on me once. I called Garmin and they were able to walk me through a procedure that fixed it. Don't know if they can do the same for you, but it is worth a try.

I believe Jim had a death in his family and so hasn't been as available as he has been in the past. I'm not sure when that might change. I would still try to contact him, but if you don't get an immediate reply this is probably the reason.

Truly sorry to hear that, losing a loved one is always difficult to bear. I wish him and his family the best in these trying times.
