printing maps

How many of you have noticed the 2015 map updates don't allow you to print the map from either Basecamp or Mapsource?

Sometimes when route planning, you might want to have a strip map printed out showing your planned travels. The 2015 editions of the mapping software don't allow the maps to be printed as it violates a copyright. The last version to allow printing was 2014.4, so if you have it, hold onto it.

Basecamp Newbe

Started playing around with Basecamp the other day to see if I was interested and noticed that I could not print out any maps. I thought it was due to my inexperience with the program.

This seems like a fairly major short coming in this program. I still like printed things and a would like to be able to have that option.

Print map

Yes I did notice that - IIRC there was a warning to that effect when I first used the map in Basecamp.

I did something to make it so it will print but can't remember what it was.

I will try to find how I did it, but since I made it work, others no doubt also did, and some google searching should find the way.

While it may be possible

While it may be possible to bypass the lockout of printing the maps, I don't think it would be advisable to publish it on this site. It would be playing with our terms of agreement about not pirating software. Bypassing the lock may also run afoul of the Digital Copyright Act and that could put some of the readers at risk if it were pursued.

Bypass

I don't think what I did was illegal because I am sure that I did not "bypass a lockout" even though I don't recall exactly what I did.

I do not pirate any thing, and would not post a method if it was not legal.

@Boxcar

Did you install the map to your computer, or does Basecamp read the Map from your Garmin?

I am going to do some testing on another computer, but think it may have been simply installing the map to my computer that made it printable in BaseCamp.

printing maps

I just printed maps in both base camp and mapsource. using 1015.2

Trip Tics

In my travels, there have been a few times when my satellite reception has been less than stellar. While it has never been a problem, I also like to have strip maps.

I use Trip Tics from AAA. While I think you have to be a member in order to print them, I highly recommend this service for several reasons. Over the years, I can demonstrate that I have made money by having AAA for my family. Since AAA comes after "you" and not a vehicle, there have been three times when a family member was able to get from the "middle of nowhere" back to a safe repair shop because they had the card.

I like the Trip Tics because they give me detailed "construction" information along my route.

The individual "tics" are very similar to the "turn by turn" instructions from our devices.

some details?

Did you install the map to both your garmin and your computer, or just to your garmin?

@Boxcar

If you are using a map via a clone that is on an SD card or flash drive, that may block printing also.

printing

You can print maps that are installed on computer and visible in MapSource. But when I tried to print maps from Basecamp there is one difference:

- maps that are installed on computer can be printed,

- maps that are read from connected device can't be printed.

For installation I was using MpUpdater. Maps are latest versions of NA and EU CityNavigator.

My maps

My maps are on the computer. I always install to both the device and computer so I have them available without connecting my unit.

I just looked at a route I have planned and see the print button under route directions actually does print the map.

What I haven't tried lately is doing a multi-day trip using the planner. That may be where the problem is.

More Info

I uninstalled the 2015.20 map from my computer and can still print in Basecamp when using a map on my Garmin.

Apparently once the "credentials" are established by installing the map to the computer, the credentials remain even after uninstalling the map from the computer.

I am thinking that this will work for those that use clones on SD cards or flash drives.

OOPS

@ Boxcar Just read your latest post and figure maybe the establishing credentials thing is not true nor necessary.

printing maps

I installed maps to both device and computer

Just printed

I just printed Map and directions from 2015.2 on BaseCamp.

I have several maps still installed and showing when I look at Maps but the 2015.2 is checked.

I clicked on the left side under my collection and the folder that holds the trip I wanted then went to file, print.

It worked just fine.

It is nice to have a backup paper just in case, even if I forget to print them on most trips.
smile

EDIT: shimmed over you post and see you found this out. Will look at multi day trips

OK Box Car

I just went and made a two day trip.
Then I exited it and went back to the My Collection view.
I did the same thing
Clicked on the top "Trip to" and then went to File, Print, and it works.

Try this.

Printing requirments

This does not apply to Boxcar’s case, but for others this may apply:
BaseCamp will allow printing the turn by turn directions of a route on both PC and Mac versions.

Note: Not all maps are printable. Some mapping license agreements restricts the option to print. Maps must be installed to computer. Preloaded SD cards and downloadable content are not able to be printed.
Did you try the trip planner.

If it worked, were you having a senior moment?

I haven't updated

from 2015.1 on one computer. This is the one that wouldn't let me print. It's running W7 64-bit. 2015.2 pops up the warning that printing is disabled due to copyright restrictions. But to answer Mary's question, the computer I have at the office did print a map using Trip Planner to plan a multiday route.

printing via 2015.1 map works for me

I have the 2015.1 map on a computer with same specs and am able to print maps. (I assume that the "2015.2 pops..." is a typo.)

After some testing today, I am certain that I fixed my no print situation by installing the map to the computer after having installed it to just the device. In other words, I have done nothing else to make it print maps.

Prinnt works with CNNA 2015.20 too

Same Win7 pro, 64 bits. Print works for CNNA 2015.20 through Mapsource, with or without a route superimposed. Printing for turn-by-turn text instruction works too as with previous maps. I do not use Basecamp.

Since I don't

Since I don't think anyone has actually noted what the message about print restrictions in Basecamp is here it is:

Certain limitations are placed on City Navigator North America 2015.20 3D due to licensing restrictions. These are - No Map Printing.

That being said when you attempt to print a map from Basecamp using 2015.20 maps you get an error message that indicates that if you change to the "basic map" you will be able to print. I did that and sure enough I could print the map.

I then went back to using CN 2015.20 maps and to my surprise was able to print using those maps without the error message appearing. Note I was only attempting to print a map which showed a route on it, and not any turn by turn directions (if that's even possible in Basecamp).

If this works for others, it could be a perfectly legal workaround to the initial posted restriction.

No problem or restrictions at all show when attempting to print from Mapsource.

very interesting

@t923347

That is very interesting albeit weird behavior of Garmin software. smile

No doubt it is legal, and it may even be the way I "fixed" mine -wish I could remember.

printing turn by turn

According to the Garmin FAQ I posted a link to above that should be possible but, as always with Garmin software, the key word is "should".

Garmin FAQ wrote:

BaseCamp will allow printing the turn by turn directions of a route on both PC and Mac versions.

*Note: Not all maps are printable. Some mapping license agreements restricts the option to print. Maps must be installed to computer. Preloaded SD cards and downloadable content are not able to be printed.

To print a route using BaseCamp on a PC:
1.Choose the Pan or Select tool
2.Put the cursor on the route and a speech balloon will appear
3.Click on the balloon
4.Select the Route Directions tab in the window
5.Click print in the lower right and a print setup box will appear
6.Select Print again to print a copy of the map and turn-by-turn directions

To print a route using BaseCamp on a Mac:
1.Choose the Selector or Hand tool
2.Double-click the route to print
3.Choose the Directions tab in the box that appears
4.Select the Print option

Once the print option has been selected both the maps and directions of the selected route will be printed.

That does seem to be what happens under some conditions but is opposite to what I would expect.

I mean, what better proof that a "legitimate" map was being used would there be than using the map on the device?

And, instructions to migrate maps to other computers (including unlock codes) can be found on Garmin's own forums so having the map on a computer would not necessarily prove that the user of that computer even had a Garmin. Apparently Garmin sanctions that situation - else they would not allow the instructions to be posted on their own site.

Good stuff

Good stuff! Always nice to learn something new. Thanks.

I found a bit different way to print the map and directions in Basecamp as well:

- Right click on the route line showing on the map.
- Select Open and the Properties page for the route will appear on the screen.
- click Print in the bottom right corner of the Properties screen and the map plus directions will print.

Slightly different way:

- Right click on the route line
- Select Open and the Properties page for the route will appear on the screen.
- Click the Route Directions Tab to the right of the Properties tab.
- click Print in the bottom right corner of the Properties screen and the map plus directions will print.

Note - it appears that both the map and directions will print by clicking the print box on the properties OR route directions tab (same print job either way).

Another way to print in BaseCamp

I clicked on the left side under my collection and then click the folder that holds the trip I wanted then I go to file, print.

No Printing if Map Only Installed on Nuvi

Why is the "Print..." function restricted?

Why? It just is... If you don't have the map installed on your PC, then you can't print any map detail. The discussion in the Garmin forums has more details.

If Basecamp loaded the map from the GPS, you CAN print route directions as mentioned previously, IF you switch to the Global Map before printing.

because 2015.20 maps were not installed on the computer

It worked for me too Rick (on a PC with 2015.20), but I think it's an obscure BaseCamp bug.

When I tried it on another PC without 2015.20, there was no way around the error message.
