Suddnly no 2015.20 map on 3790

Yesterday morning I left home and the GPS showed the streets I was traveling on.

I parked the car for an hour leaving the GPS powered on. When I got back to my car the 2015.20 map was totally gone with no streets showing at all. The GPS was VERY warm from the sun.

The rest of the day no street map.

Then in the evening I had a thought and found that in the settings, map info only the "Demo" map was registered, no 2015.20 at all!

In Windows Explorer the 2015.20 gmapprom.img was actually on the GPS but not being recognized.

So connected the GPS to my PC and via Mapinstall re-installed 2015.20 and after that all is well again.

Thankfully I always install to PC and device when downloading the new map.

Why I am posting this is because I wonder if this has happened to anyone else at some time or other.

Personally I find the 3790 an unreliable GPS, has already been replaced once by Garmin because it totally quit on me once and my ancient 855 is the most reliable!

Missing Map

I think that ALL of the Garmin units suffer from Gremlins from time to time.

Disappearing Map

Never heard of that before, must be frustrating especially if you are travelling and don't have access to a PC.

While home, having a current backup is very important. Rather than use map installer to reinstall the map again you could have just copied the gmapprom.img back to the Nuvi. That should speed things up a bit.

I'm assuming the gmapprom.unl and gmapprom.gma were still present on the 3790 and only the gmapprom.img disappeared.

That is the strange thing, all files were there inluding the 2.*GB gmapprom.img!

I wonder had you done a hard reset since the map was still there if it would have come back to life.
I guess we'll never know but electronics are quite unpredictable. I found many times when an electronic device didn't work properly, by simply disconnecting it from the 120v power source corrected it.

.

I've had this happen on occasion on my 3790. Turn the nuvi off fully, and then reboot it. Fixed.

In my opinion, that should not happen, the map should still be present if you're in standby mode.

I never have had anything like that happen here in Tucson even with prolonged use of my 3790 at temps exceeding 100 degrees.

is your

map on a card or the device?
are you getting errors when it attempts to load the maps?

the only time I didn't have maps is when the down load failed, or my card went bad.

On GPS

On the 3790 there is no need to have the map on a SD card. As I said ALL files were there right on the first download and it worked for a couple of days.
