Going From Garmin Express To Garmin MapInstall

I have several Garmins. They are Nuvi 500, Nuvi 360, Nuvi 350, and two Garminfones. In the past, I simply used Garmin Express to update the maps. Since the maps exceeded the memory capacity of the devices, I simply selected a portion of the US for each device. Now, since I have micro SD cards in each device, I want to make use of that extra memory and have the most current map of the entire US on each device. I know I will have to use Garmin MapInstall rather than Garmin Express. However, to do this, will I have to do anything special? Will MapInstall simply try to update whatever portion of the US had been most recently updated?

You should still be able to Garmin Express. I have a MicroSD card in my 2450 and Garmin Express uses it just fine.

is to follow Alandb's very thorough instructions on cloning.

MapInstall

If you want to use MapInstall to install a portion of the map to the internal storage and the remaining regions to the SD, you would still use Garmin Express or MapUpdater to install the full map to your PC. Then run MapInstall to copy the regions you select to the appropriate targets.

I am not sure about the Garminfones or the 500, but on your 3xx devices you will need to split the map as you suggest because there is a 2GB file size limit and the full NA map is larger than 2GB.

Can someone give the latest version number of Mapinstall?

PC?

The Windows version is currently 4.0.4. If you have MapInstall installed, right-click the upper left hand corner (in the colored Windows banner) to determine your version and to check for updates.

Map Install

I prefer MapInstall over GE.

I never had good luck with GE when installing maps.

hummm

When I updated my Zumo 550 to 2015.10 Garmin Express told me I didn't have enough room and I had to choose a portion, I chose the east part of the USA. Then used either basecamp or mapinstall (I have CRS) to install the rest of the parts of North America I wanted to the SD card manually.

I had to manually choose and add each portion (states/provinces) to the list for the final install, which was a long process. Some states/provinces had several maps because some of the larger metropolitan areas had their own little maps. Once all was chosen and was small enough to fit on the card the actual install was a breeze.
