Trouble every time I try to Backup one of my 765"s

Every time I try to back up one of the 765's I have, Windows gives me an error and my 765 resets. This only happens on one unit. It just will not let me back it up. Any help would be appreciated.

it would help

if you told us what Windows reported.

When you attach the 765 to your PC (we assume), what happens? Do you get the dialog that asks what you want to do, and if so, can you look at the files on the device?

Does the device have a SD card, and if so, what happens if you remove it before attaching the device to your computer?

Do you have an older backup of this particular 765?

I can and I can't

I can see the files of the device and of the SD card on my PC. I can copy the files from the SD card.
I can not copy the files from the Garmin itself. It starts to copy and then gives me an error on the PC then the Garmin restarts itself.

Not a good sign.

That is not a good sign Ron1311 and may indicate a pending failure of your device. You apparently have one or more corrupt files or folders on the device. You could try copying a few items at a time to try to narrow down which file(s) are corrupt.

Cannot

Have you set your Windows Explorer in "Tools" "Folder Options" "View" to view all files? Uncheck hide system files etc. Uncheck all "HIDE" boxes.

Charge the battery

Have you charged the battery for at least 5 hours using a charger that plugs in to the wall? Intermittent charging in the vehicle or charging from a USB connection is insufficient.

tried another USB port?

I've seen some cases where communication between the PC and device is more and less reliable depending on which specific USB port on the PC is used. Since you appear to be reporting initial success, it seems something may be marginal--and just possibly it may work better on another port (or for that matter a port on a different PC).

I Agree With This

I think alandb is on the right track.
I would start on one folder at a time, if no corrupt files it should be able to copy those files.
When you reach the folder with the corrupt file(s) the issue should appear.

Next create that folders name to your chosen backup drive. Then one by one attempt to copy the files from that corrupt folder to the folder on your backup until you find the corrupt one. There possibly could be more than one in that folder or even other folders.

!!!

BUT to be able to do that WINDOWS EXPLORER must be set to be able to see ALL files. Otherwise it will not see system files and others !!!

He did say "Every time I try to back up one of the 765's".
I'm assuming he uses the same PC to back up both so it would not be a Windows issue.

Even if files were hidden, he should be able to backup those that are visible.

Nuvi 7x5

The nuvi 7x5 series doesn't have any hidden folders or files.

765tFile error

I tracked the file down to the mapupdate.img file thanks to the suggestion on this forum,. I tried a different back up program to see if that would make any difference. Well I just can not get the one unit to backup. I think it is better at this point top leave well enough alone. Next time there is a new map update I will try again. Because of all the data exchanges with the unit I broke the connecter on the unit and hat to replace the mount. I am going to play it safe and not play around with the unit. Thank you everyone for all the help. This is a great site. I am learning a lot.
