Virginia state plans to drop EZ pass monthly fee

I just received an email from VA EZpass that they will not charge EZPass monthly maintenance fee starting July 1, 2014. Two months earlier than originally planned.
Way to GO, VA!

Good to hear!

That seems almost unprecedented.

Don't Hold

Don't hold your breath for MD to do the same thing!

How much was the fee?

So how much is your savings?

$0.00. I had it since it was called SmartTag (sm). smile
I am not pay any maintenance fee as long as I do not request a replacement transponder (ex. dead battery).

I might need to get one now

I might need to get one now. I have an old I-Pass (Illinois) and haven't bothered to get a new E-ZPass Flex, but I might want to do so now.

The lack of fee on the I-Pass is why I didn't switch over. But I would like to be able to use the HOV express lanes without fee.

Use EZ Pass 3 times & no fee in MD

Maryland does not charge the $1.50 monthly maintenance fee if you use your EZ Pass three or more times in a month. That is easy to do if you live near the new Inter-County Connector (I-200). We average $25 to $35 per month in tolls, mainly from the ICC. But worth it to avoid the frustration of the many traffic lights and incompetent drivers in the area.

Time to change

my MD tag to a VA tag.

Maintenance Fee

Re: Replacement/Maintenance fee mentioned previously: I have had a N.Y. EZ Pass for many years and about a year ago I got a package in the mail containing a new transponder. Inside was a note to the effect that their records indicate my orginal was approaching end-of-life (I think I had it for about 10 years) and enclosed was a replacement with the instructions to return the old unit in the pre-paid envelope to avoid being charged for it. All in all a pleasant and unexpected surprise.

$12/yr.....but seriously, $12/mo. would be something I would like, and we used to get $20/mo. as a commuter that was taken away. EZPass is a joke and I find it funny how it wasn't going to be used to track criminals, but now look at Manhattan...

got 3

And our account has 4, interestingly the one from 2001 was not included and that's almost 13 yrs. old. NJ EZPass showed also that all 3 were not returned almost 3 mos. later. When I emailed cust svc, absolutely no response. About another month passed by and suddenly my account didn't show that I had 7 EZPass tags, only 4. What a joke....
