Oh well...

Try this

That's happened to me in the past as well.

What I do now when (if) I need Garmin Express is to first uninstall the program from my computer, then reinstall the program as a new program rather than an update.

If the upgrade crash prevents your uninstalling the program right now, try installing it fresh from Garmin, then immediately uninstall it. You may also look for older recent threads discussing Garmin Express for more info.

Good luck.

Failed, try again

Dear Jose Desangles,

During the installation of Garmin Express, on a computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista, it may fail with an error Failed, try again?. This is typically caused by Garmin Express version 3.2.4 and higher requiring the Windows Installer service 4.5 from Microsoft to be installed on the computer in order to install Garmin Express.

To verify which Windows Installer version is running on the computer:

Open a Run window by pressing the Windows logo key + R
Type in msiexec
Click OK
Once the service has been updated Garmin Express should now install without an installation error.

Failed, try again

no sweat

Updated to v3.2.5.0 this morning with no problems on my Windows 8.1 computer.

My Windows Installer is V 5.0.9600.16384

My failures

My recent failures to update Garmin Express occur with Windows ® Installer. V 5.0.7601.17514.

The failures occur when trying to update GE to a newer version. As stated before, if I uninstall GE, then install GE fresh, it works.

I see that Evert has WI V 5.0.9600.16384. I haven't found a way to update my Windows 7 Windows installer from what I have to what Evert used, but I'm well beyond 4.5.

To me, there's more going on here than the Windows Installer version.

Msiexec v4.5

Thanks for the info, updating msiexec to v4.5 took care of the problem.

Something besides Windows Installer version

Craig, after you posted that, I updated GE to v 3.2.5.0 on my Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit computer which has Windows ® Installer. V 5.0.7601.17514 .The update installed with no problems and I even updated the map on my computer using the new GE version.

So I agree that the problems some folks are having is caused something other than the Windows Installer version.

Another?

Seems like almost every time I open Garmin Express there's a software update for the application.

Thanks

Thanks--and welcome back to The Factory since I don't remember seeing many posts from you until quite recently. Your insight is always helpful--the old saga of the sox.exe version problem would never have been solved without you.

Update Success

Updated last night and all went well. No hitches, no issues. That was a pleasant surprise. Even Extras works.

You're welcome.

Yep, I was AWOL for a long time. Thank you for your kind words but I bet someone else would have figured it out and probably with less stumbling around. smile

Great I will look for this!

Not quite ready for Prime Time?

Took the upgrade on my Win7 box and it installed OK with one little glitch: After the install it re-started and indicated: "New map update "2015.10 Full Europe" available to install. Shortly after, the GE window/app closed (by itself). When I re-started GE, it then showed everything was up to date for my 2595. (Interesting since I never had anything connected.) Oh-well, if only I was a little quicker I could have had the Europe map too???!!!!! wink (Don't think it would have fit anyway.)

Well, GE installed with no errors and "Extras" worked first time I tried it.

finally installed

This time for the upgrade, tried to uninstall, no luck. Tried to download a new version and another 'failed'. The downloaded ones were 3.2.4.0. Went to uninstall and reclicked the 'failed, try again?' many times and finally it worked. Reboot computer, and downloaded another 3.2.4.0. as a new program. Tried to install with more 'failed'. Clicked the 'failed' many times and once again, finally it worked. I did not try anything else, but will next time. (If there will be a next). Just like last time, everything went smoothly on the Vista laptop and the other Win 7 desktop. My computer must not like Garmin Express.

New GE

On my vista laptop and Win 7 desktop the update went smoothly within GE. On the other hand, my computer didn't fare so well. When I finally did download the 'new' GE, it was 3.2.4.0 and after it was installed, it automatically ended up with 3.2.5.

Garmin Express V3.2.5.0 not launching

I have updated to Garmin Express V3.2.5.0 but after attaching my garmin 3597 or the 1690 it will not launch the Garmin Express V3.2.5.0. It used to launch automatcally. The settings for the automatic launch is also checked. Any insight on how to fix this? Thank you.

Updated to 3.2.5.0

Updated with no problems. GPS fired up with GE after doing the update. Again, no problems.

I was told by Garmin support to use map updater for windows xp as the express updater was troublesome for xp users.

Why?

Just out of curiosity, why do need to update GE right now?
Once you have downloaded the newest Garmin Mapupdate there is no further need for GE.

My observation anyway.

It might be a way that some of the newer devices will get updates?

Agreed - that should not be a reason to update GE itself but I seem to recall something about a Fenix? mentioned.

Works in Background

I don't know how valuable this feature is or how often folks take advantage of it, but I remember Garmin made a big deal about GE having the feature of downloading a map update in the background and letting you know when it was ready to be loaded onto the Nuvi.

Thanks

Happy New Year

Garmin Express & all the

Garmin Express & all the associated pieces only get reactivated & updated when I update maps twice a year. The 4 GPS units I maintain for the family remain stable by not constantly allowing Garmin "tweaks" to ruin them.

I never get lost, but I do explore new territory every now and then.

I use with my old XP laptop and it works fine

I will admit though that downloads and installs happened MUCH quicker when I used my sons new laptop the last time a map was released. (Win8, 12gb memory, and the lastest USB science)
