Offline Map

http://google-latlong.blogspot.co.uk/2014/05/get-on-road-go-...

Does anyone know how this works?

It says:

Before setting off on your next vacation, hike, or roadtrip, search for an area and tap on its place info sheet, then when available, you can select “Save map to use offline,” and give your map a custom name, like “Toronto Vacation.”

It's all good so far. Then it says:

To find your offline maps, sign-in, tap the profile icon next to the search box in the top right corner, and scroll to see “Toronto Vacation” and other saved maps.

Whoa... wait.. sign-in? How can we sign in if we're offline?

You'd normally be already signed in, even when you're offline smile

Offline Maps not working in Canada

Doesn't seem to work on both my Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus. Tried Toronto and San Francisco as examples...

Anyone actually get this to work for them?

sounds good

PSL

Wonder if they'll add posted speed limits next? I know the Waze group has been asking for that forever.

Guess it's only a matter of time until they merge both products instead of paying two development teams as well.

I don't understand what you're saying. I turned off WiFi and Cellular data. Touch Search field and I got:
No network connection. Try again.

Can't sign in without network connection.

Weekend

Haven't had a chance to try it since I take public transit to work but will give it a shot this weekend. Agree about the need for PSL data-I go through too many small burbs on the weekend with widely varying speed limits. God help me if they change the signs, because a lot of them I have memorized for speed changes. Traffic tickets are a HUGE source of revenue for a lot of the small towns that surround Chicago.

And to add

Chicago has more speed and red light camera's per capita than any Chicago Suburb so I guess that holds true for Chicago too.

According to the View maps offline section of Maps help:

  1. Open the Google Maps app.
  2. Touch the person icon in the top right corner of the home screen to go to your Maps Activity page.
  3. Scroll down to the "Offline maps" section of the Maps Activity page, and touch the area of the map that you'd like to see on the map. To see all of your saved maps, touch View all and manage.

Chewbacca, have you created an offline map before attempting this?

I get a "No network connection" message when I touch the person icon. I'm assuming this is because so far I have not been able to create an offline map...

I went as far as seeing the option to save map for offline use but I don't remember if I touched it (to save the map) or not. I don't have the device with me right now. Will have to wait until later today when I get home to try it again. Btw, which area in Canada were you trying to save as offline map? I'd like to see if I'm able to do that using my device.

.

I tried Toronto, and also San Francisco

I definitely can see offline

I definitely can see offline map option for San Francisco. You may be right, it's not available for Canadian users yet.

it's about time

It's about time they did this but I'm not leaving my Garmin anytime soon. Can't beat dashboard navigation with a large screen and offline maps, no battery drain, etc.!

Tested it again. I saved San

Tested it again. I saved San Francisco map. Turned off WiFi, cell data. Went back to Google Map. I can open SF offline map. I can only view the map, scroll left/right/up/down. Can't use it to give me directions from point A to point B without network connection.
