Travel to Italy

Hi I am traveling to Italy soon. . I am hoping someone out here has some garmen downloads to make the driving trip a little easier. I will be traveling to Sorrento, Pompeii, Lecce, Oriveto, Cinque Terre and then to Germany. Rotthenburg, Dachau and Munich. Any information someone has would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

You can head to OpenStreetMap to download a routable map of the area you are visiting.

Or, head to Garmin to purchase a map.

Bring your nuvi with official Garmin maps

We recently were in Italy for two weeks and I made the mistake of relying on a Navigon app with the Europe map running on a tablet with GPS but with WiFi only. The app and map cost about $100-. Google Maps was the backup and I had downloaded map tiles so the maps were on the tablet.

All Favorites were saved in advance to both apps - our hotels, restaurants, railroad stations, and attractions. We weren't driving but we were on our own without an organized tour.

In the US, the tablet had worked fine for navigation, but it just doesn't have all the features of the nuvi that we rely on. In Italy, the tablet would always show our position on the base map, but all other map detail was gone. This was the same for Navigon or Google Maps. It would not display the name of the street we were on, much less any POIs or nearby attractions. Navigation to a favorite did not work with either app. shock

My advice is to bring your nuvi with the best Europe map you can get, which would be a Garmin, and update to the latest map before you leave. I assume the map would be on an SD card, either bought on a card or downloaded to your card. Bring all your POIs using POI Loader or as Favorites.

In spite of these difficulties, we had a very good trip and really enjoyed ourselves!
