"Official" Garmin Express Forum

Garmin recently added a Garmin Express Forum as it's own forum category on their software/developer forum site. At least for the moment, there seems to be an actual Garmin support representative that is monitoring the new forum, which is kind of unusal in the Garmin forums.

One interesting link he posted that I hadn't seen before regarding troubleshooting Express is this: What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?

What do I do if my device doesn t support the SD card feature during the Garmin Express map update?
10/21/2013
It may not be possible to load the entire map update to some Garmin GPS devices using Garmin Express. As map updates increase in detail, they also increase in size and some devices do not have enough internal memory to store the entire update.

If the device cannot fit the entire map update and is not given the option to load directly to a SD card during the update,1 the maps can be installed to the computer and sent to a SD or microSD data card (please refer to the manual to see which card is right for the device) via Garmin MapInstall.

During the Garmin Express map update, to install the maps to the computer:

Windows

Start the map update using Garmin Express
At the "Oops, There's Not Enough Space" prompt, click Continue
Click the drop-down list at the top left of the window
Click Device & Computer
Select a region from the list to install to the internal memory of the Garmin (The largest map region will be installed to the computer)
Click Continue
Mac OS X

Start the map update using Garmin Express
At the "Select a Region" screen, select a region from the list to install to the internal memory of the Garmin
Click the drop-down list at the bottom left of the window
Click Device and Mac
Click Install
After the installation of the map update has completed, the maps will be installed to the computer. Additional maps can be sent from MapInstall to a SD or microSD card.

For more information about using MapInstall, refer to the article: How do I install mapping to my device with MapInstall?

Note: The data card must remain in the device in order to view the additional mapping loaded to it.

1These devices require the use of MapInstall to install map data to an SD card, if it does not fit directly on the device during the map update with either Garmin Express or the Garmin Map Update application:

Does This mean that Garmin is actually paying attention?

Does This mean that Garmin is actually paying attention? Maybe they're reading the posts on this site and finally figuring out that people weren't happy.

Now maybe they should set up a forum for their GPS units, so we can tell them directly how their engineering isn't listening to people.

It is no longer there. I searched for it under other titles but can not find it.

It was very similar to alandb's cloning to SD card; wonder why it was pulled.

Note that the web doesn't quickly forget. I tried this Google query site:forums.garmin.com "unable to update" and the top hit was the link. It also failed.

Wonder if it was something Garmin did not approve?

click on"Garmin Express" in alanb's first post.

Release notes for Express Update!

Garmin released Garmin Express version 3.0.12.0 today and actually posted RELEASE NOTES on their new forum: https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?79176-Garmin-Express-Release-Notes&p=275516#post275516.

Maybe Garmin really is paying attention! That said, there is nothing in the release notes that makes me want to install Express at this point. I will not be surprised though if we don't have any choice when the 2015.10 map update comes out.

This is not a new forum

I went to this this site and after clicking around, I found that this is not restricted to Garmin Express and has been around since some time in 2011. Why is this the first time we seem to be hearing about it?

Go to https://forums.garmin.com/forum.php to get to the home page and see other topics that are on the go, including discussions about Basecamp, etc.

alandb's link was Garmin Express Forum

Inside the PC version of the Garmin Express forum, I found a thread named "Unable to Update Maps on New nuvi 2597" found at THEN
https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?37019-Unable-to-upd...

This link had already been trolled by web crawlers and indexed so that it can be found by Googling

The "Garmin Express" category is new to the forum. The Garmin forum has been linked from their main site for quite a while.

Why does Garmin Express' even need a special thread or a forum?

Why does Garmin Express' even need a special thread or a forum?

Garmin Express is merely a tool - something that should not need to be discussed...if designed correctly.

Garmin has had the software/developer forums for a long time, but Garmin Express was never offically included in the forum. The closest sub forum they had was "Installing and updating maps" subforums in the PC and Mac software categories. But interestingly, Garmin Express was not maintained by Garmin's desktop software group that runs the forum, but instead by the cartography group who has nothing to do with the forum. So even though users kept posting about Garmin Express, it was never officially recognized as a legitimate forum topic.

So the Garmin Express Forum category is a new forum, and it is a step in the right direction for Garmin to add some credibility to the product. This old thread gives a little of the history of Garmin's position regarding discussion of Garmin Express in their forum (see the post by Garmin's Falagar): https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?34660-Garmin-Expres....

Running Garmin Express

Today I am running Garmin Express v 3.0.12.0 to download the latest map for my nuvi 760.

The first problem was that Garmin Express hung on the start of the map update. I went to the Garmin site to check Garmin Communicator, a browser plug-in:

http://software.garmin.com/en-US/gcp.html

Communicator was already installed but it was being blocked by the browser (Chrome) and I had to click on "always trust content from Garmin." I had done this several times in the past but this always happens again. Anyway, Communicator was now working.

Express still hung on the start of the map update. My device, nuvi 760, had been detected but it had a question mark over its icon. I went to the link provided by alandb for "What should I do if I'm having issues with the Garmin Express client?" It said to remove the device from Garmin Express, restart the computer, and let Garmin Express detect it again. The question mark was gone.

Garmin Express has now properly installed the map to the nuvi. It took about 2 hours, since the 760 is a USB1 device.

Thanks, alandb!

Release Notes

I am also glad to see release notes. Now I can tell if I need to update or not.

Garmin Express for the 3597LMTHD

Garmin Express properly updated the latest firmware and maps for the nuvi 3597LMTHD. It went without error and took 27 minutes, since the 3597 is a USB2 device.

dobs108 smile

@dobs108

I appreciate these reports.

You mentioned something that you were able to catch and fix (Garmin being blocked) that I'll wager a lot of those who are railing against GE had as an issue, but were not thorough enough in debugging to find.

Positive reports

Positive reports are important but I used workarounds I was already aware of as well as the suggestions of alandb. I hope this experience helps others.

I suggest that we try the latest update to Garmin Express.

Before I ran Garmin Express for the 3597 I tried Garmin MapInstall - it could not be made to work. However, no SD card was installed in the nuvi.

dobs108 smile

Thanks

Taking a look now. Hope to find some beneficial info.
