red light cameras (was Returned my c330 for c530)

Hi there Cool,

Here is an article about red light cameras
FHWA Report on red light cameras

Some cities have red light traffic cameras in high traffic accident intersections to help cut down the amount of right angle crashes and also cut down on red light running. If you go past a certain mark in the intersection after the light turns red your car will be photographed and you will receive a ticket in the mail.
We have a database of red light camera locations and if you add them to your gps your unit will let you know when you are approaching one of these intersections.

While the number of right angle crashes have gone down the number of rear end accidents have gone up because now people are slamming on their brakes to keep from running the red light, and the person behind them are still planning on running the red light and have sped up right before the other person has slammed on their brakes.

slamming on the brakes

Since I know where the red-light cameras are in my area, I have been watching the change from yellow to red in these red light camera intersection vs. standard intersection and I swear it changes lot quicker.

Has anyone actually compared to see if they shortened the time to generate more revenue?

While in the middle crossing these red-light camera intersection (going about 35 mph), the light changed to yellow. But it changed to red while I was crossing the other side.

I guess I am being too paranoid of getting a ticket.

Thanks.

Thank You very much Miss

Thank You very much Miss POI, that was a very good explantion of it and now I understand it. =]

Red light camera = tax

It has been shown in studies that many of the problems with people running red lights, is that the length of the yellow is too short. It is simple physics. A car going the posted speed limit, will take a certain amount of time to react to the yellow light and safely stop. Time = distance. Depending on the posted speed limit, and the size of the intersection, plus a reaction time should determine the length of the yellow light. If the yellow is too short, you have no choice, you will run the light if you happen into the right distance from the intersection when the light begins it's yellow cycle.

Cities, instead of adjusting the timing on the yellow, instead, decide instead that they can tax us and claim it is for safety. Think of this as a lottery, sometimes you pay, sometimes you don't - just depends on if you are lucky.

This is really no different than the speed trap concept. Post a very unrealisticly low speed limit that is not justified by the conditions, or, aburptly modify the speed limit for no reason, and many people will not obey. A city simply set sup a radar, VASCAR, or similar and collects the tax.
