Options for iPhone?

I used to own a Garmin GPS but it broke. I just bought my first smartphone, an iPhone 5s. Are there any speed camera alert options available to iPhone users? Seems it is a waste to buy a separate GPS just for speed camera alerts. Thanks

Apps

There are apps for that.

I see apps but all have poor

I see apps but all have poor ratings. Is there an app you can suggest? Thanks.

Waze

Waze does a good job of alerting you to the camera locations. Permanent cameras are on there as a permanent warning. You even have a chance of knowing about the mobile ones if someone ahead of you has reported it. The mobile ones may not stay on the maps for more than an hour or so though.

I just downloaded Waze today and did a quick spot check of known cameras in my area, and it was extremely accurate. You do need to have a data connection for it to work - not sure how intensive it is on bandwidth.

I just discovered Waze three

I just discovered Waze three weeks back and find I am using it more and more than my garmin 3790LMT in philadelphia. The advantage is has is the real time updates of every temporary cop speed trap, vehicles on side of road and the traffic updates often better than my . It's especially good out in the sticks where there is no Garmin live traffic updating.

Signing in to Waze question

I just tried to sign in to Waze which was already installed on my phone from previous iPhone and it wants all my Facebook friends list, email contacts, etc.

I managed to bypass this and just initiate the app with no sign in. Is there any real benefit to FB connection?
I really do not want apps posting for me, so I avoid all those games, etc.

Will the red light function and other functions only work if you give up your FB contacts and other info?

No

Just use the Waze signing. Everything works just fine. Signing in with FB lets it post your position to FB and see what friends you have that are also connected to Waze. I've used it for quite a while without having to sign in to FB.

waze

waze offers more than traffic and also its real time and if a user posts an incident and you nearby the location it will pop up to ask you to confirm and also you collect points in posting.

If you have friends and they are registered - you will be able to see where they are.

Trapster is good too as any incident it warns you and asks you to confirm.

The only problem with both is that it drains the smartphone battery fast if you dont have it plugged in while driving.

Waze sign in

Thanks phranc. Helpful info. I prefer not to interact with FB in ways that requires me to give them my contacts. The more you get "out there" the less privacy you have.

FWIW I played with Trapster

FWIW I played with Trapster a bit over the weekend and it works fine without logging in and there is a way to turn off its data tracking. Found the camera info to be current enough for the Wash DC area.

Waze Sign In

You don't have to sign in to FB to use WAZE. Just skip that part when you are setting it up and it works just fine but it does use up your battery so make sure you get a car charger for your phone.
