Keeping the Windmill Alive - Your last trip? – March 2014

In danger of losing your windmill?

Maybe you can share the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you used it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.).

Anything to keep your windmill alive.

This thread will be closed on the last day of the month and a new one will be opened.

Florida

Just returned from a two week 4000 mile road trip to Florida (Naples, Everglades, Keys, Daytona Beach, Orlando). Left Daytona Beach just as the bikers were rolling in.

My new 3597LMTHD worked great ... no major issues. I got to see and use many of the advanced features on the 3597.

Chatanooga TN

Did my annual trip to St Louis for the MVC Basketball tournament and the proceeded to Paducah Kentucky to Hancocks of Paducah quilt store where my wife said she might not buy anything but came out with over $150 worth of cloth.
We then drove down to Chattanooga Tennessee to photograph parts of the Delta Queen River Boat. I am building from scratch a 6 foot RC model of it and had to verify some things. Found out because of the recent cold, pipes froze and burst and they were repairing the damage. It was also sold and getting ready to move to Cincinnati Ohio where it will be a museum.

Hmm...

Someplace warm?

Made a trip to...

Wickenburg, AZ and met up with a Cousin. Walked the town and enjoyed the sites. Nice little museum and hit a few antique shops!

today...

nothing special

Louisville

Took my Garmin to Louisville, KY. I had not been there in many years, so things were changed quite a bit. The Garmin was indispensable in locating things to see and do.

Windmill???

I've been posting on this site since Aug. 2013. I don't understand the stars and badges. I have two badges, and occasionally I see a windmill and then a week later it's gone. Could someone explain the process? IE: how often do you have to post to keep a windmill or when do you permanently acquire one?

THANKS

WHat is the optimal distance to set casual POIs?

Downtown

My latest trip downtown revealed a Subway at a PB station, neither of which I received an alert. I will add these to the POIs.

define casual

Besides defining casual, I strongly suggest you only set alerts for your primary files such as the cameras, rest areas and perhaps one or two restaurant or others. Too many alerts and you stop listening. The other potential problem is most of these units will freeze if trying to give too many alerts at the same time.

Maps

I always purchase an updated map book every year to keep in our vehicle, "just in case". I have not needed to refer to it but, it is nice to know it is there, "just in case". Garmin GPS' are so reliable and map updates come out on a timely basis. Can't wait for the last of the major Trans Canada Highway #1 improvements/construction here in the Vancouver, BC Canada area to complete this year and the updated map is released by Navteq/Garmin. Due to all the major construction over the last 5 years here, there are signs posted in the Greater Vancouver BC area stating not to rely on your GPS maps throughout the 40km (25mi) construction zone. Once this construction is finished, it will save approx. 40 minutes travelling time through this section.
