In danger of losing your windmill?
Maybe you can share the last place your GPS took you and if you encountered any problems, or if you used it to seek out special places to go (like Thai Food, ice cream shoppes, etc.).
Anything to keep your windmill alive.

Not for a long distance rider.
I find we are using smartphones more often for planning during the trip to supplement the Garmin GPS. The ability to search points of interest, find interesting information about locations, restaurants, hotels, and get a good map overview is clearly superior. If not the the cost of data, and a convenient mount, I think the day of replacing the Garmin with smartphone navigation is nearly at hand.
Do you know of an Android App that will allow you to make a route with multiple stops and road selections? My smart phone is nowhere near as sophisticated as MapSource, can't operate without a data connection, not waterproof nor can be operated while riding.

The Brier
We had weekend tickets to the Tim Hortons Brier - the men's curling championship in Canada. It was in Kamloops BC, about 800 kilometers from home.
The Trans-Canada Highway was in terrible winter-driving conditions, there was an accident that closed the highway at Banff, and we joined a long line of vehicles east of Golden while they performed three hours of avalanche clearing. We had to layover in Revelstoke BC because they closed the highway again, west of the town. The highway didn't re-open until noon the next day, and we made it to Kamloops in time to catch the evening draw.
Anyone who wants to have a really good time should attend the weeklong Brier. Canadians have to suffer through six months of winter, so we throw really good parties!
