saved places on map

Is there a way for my nuvi2595 to display ONLY my saved places on map?
If I select show places along road, I see tons of banks and places to eat and alot of other things clogging up the map that I am not interested in.
I would like to see ONLY my favorites.

The nuvi 265 displays saved places as small squares which is great! I have the 265 in a work vehicle.

Also, is there a way to turn off the picture of the exit on the highway as I am getting close to it?
This does me no good as it takes away most of the map. I don't need to see a picture of the sign above the highway as I approach it. The map is much more useful.

.

It's not possible to show ONLY your saved places (previously called "favorites" & AKA waypoints). Garmin uses a "layer" system to show/hide on-screen map obects. The "saved places" share the same layer that the map-embedded POIs (restaurants, gas stations, etc) use. Disabling/enabling that layer affects both.

The "the picture of the exit on the highway" is known as the Junction View. It cannot be disabled from within Garmin's menu structure but it CAN be disabled by renaming the Junction View file. The file is on your nuvi in a hidden .System folder, inside a JCV folder and will be named something like DxxxxxxxA.JCV (the x's are a series of numbers/letters). The file would need to be renamed to something like DxxxxxxxA.JCV.disabled. Renaming the file prevents the GPS from seeing the file is on the unit and prevents the unit from displaying it. You'll need to set your PC show show all hidden files and system folders (Windows) to see the hidden .System folder and likely need to set the GPS from MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) to Mass Storage Mode as well. I believe all these procedures are in the FAQs or someone here can point you to the procedures.

Welcome

Welcome to the site.

Before getting too deeply into a problem posted by someone new to the site (in your case a "Saved Places" and "Junction View", we usually recommend the following.

There is a "Learn" button in the upper right of this page next to "red light cameras" that takes you to a Getting Started page. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Learn" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Tutorials.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup). It also assures that you put your (newer) unit into a state where you can see all of the folders there.

I do not think there is a way to show only saved places.

As far as not wanting to see the "junction view", I have never tried this but it would seem that disabling the .jcv file in the /.system/JCV folder might accomplish this. Perhaps changing the .jvc extension to .jcvX

Before trying this, make sure you do your BACKUP.

If any other member has tried this (accidentally or on purpose), please give us a report.

Holds up hand...I've been doing it for years.
It works. Renaming the Junction View file (changing the extension) disables the Junction View. I like to simply add the .disabled to the existing filename to remind myself that I renamed/disabled the file. The file could also be deleted from the unit as well but for the beginner, it's probably better & safer just to keep the file on the unit and just rename it to disable it. To re-enable it, just remove the .disabled extension.

Seems...

Seems we were both composing answers at the same time.

Thanks for the verification on the "disabling". I like that approach best. Because my units are not space challenged, I add something to the extension to remind me later what I have done.

model dependent

It seems that control offered to the user over what is displayed is strongly model dependent.

As I currently have my 3790LMT set up, I don't see banks and restaurants from the POI set, and do see my own waypoints (I like the old name, personally).

As people have rather varied desires on this point, it might be useful if one could find out before purchase what the default behavior in this respect is for a particular model, and just what user changes are provided in the interface. But that is a level of detail the mostly screenshots style of modern reviews is not likely to provide.

How?

I have wondered for some time if it would be worthwhile for us to create "setting trees" (for want of a better term) of each model - just so we could learn what ALL of the options really are.

Part of a "Setting Tree" on my 2595 might look like this

Apps -> Help (see Apps 1: Garmin Help)
        -> Smartphone Link
        -> ecoRoute
        -> Audible
        -> Voice Command
        -> Trip Planner
        -> Picture Viewer
        -> Where I've Been
        -> World clock
        -> Alarm Clock
        -> Last Spot
        -> Calculator
        -> Unit Converter
        -> Language Guide

Apps 1: Garmin Help -> Getting Started
                                -> Navigation
                                -> ecoRoute
                                -> Apps
                                -> Garmin Live Services
                                -> Voice Commands
                                -> Hands-free Calling
                                -> Data Management

When you get to trying all of the choices you have on your unit your find things you never could imagine were there.

Anyway, @archae86, how did you get your 3790LMT to not see banks and restaurants from the POI set, and still see my own waypoints?

What were the steps you followed to get to the choices you made?

Not to pick nits...

...but a POI only becomes a waypoint when it's part of a route.

This works - thank you for all replies

Is there maybe a way to change the icons for all banks and resturants to a smaller icon or even a blank one?

Not possible...

This is not possible. The map-embedded POIs are contained within the mapset itself. The icons used are dictated by Garmin. The end-user has no control over the icons used.
