The good news is that replacing the GPS III+ socket on the device with a USB socket should be possible. It's a matter of getting the pinout so the wires are connected to the new socket properly. The bad news is that the USB socket will be miniscule compared to the original connector and will flop around in the device. A better alternative might be to create a USB dongle from a spare cable and connect the USB cable to the dongle.
Neither option will provide plug and play support. The drivers and the interface software will still be necessary.
