New Google Maps "Send to"

I just found this.

"Send to car and the new Google Maps

Send to Car will be available soon on the new Google Maps - and we want to make sure you can use the feature as soon as it’s ready. To get the Send to Car feature in the new Google Maps, you need to sign in to your Google Account and save a Send to Car enabled device to that account.

We recommend you take the time now to set up your account so your car information will be saved when the Send to Car feature is available for the new Google Maps.

To set up your account now, sign-in and save your vehicle:

Sign in to your Google Account.
Search for a destination and click the marker to open the info window.
Click more then click Send.
In the box that appears, enter the appropriate information and make sure that “Save this device to my Google Account” box is checked.
Because Send to Car is not yet available for the new Google Maps, please continue to use the classic Google Maps to use Send to Car for now.

Why you should save your vehicle now

If you choose to not save your vehicle to your Google account today, you may lose access to Send to Car once the new Google Maps becomes the default Google Maps experience. If this happens, you can re-visit the Help Center for instructions on how to set up your car."

And Apple's IOS in the Car Feature is coming soon too

iOS 7.1 could be the start of it... expect it (7.1) to release in January... and cars supporting it will be out in 2014 as well.

No Car

Yeahbut, how about the send to GPS. Not all of us can just run out and drop 20K or more on a new car just to send coordinates to. As a matter of fact, how many of us want to spend an extra $1000 or so just to get a nag unit in a car that is obsolete when you get it, and costs as much as a new Garmin unit to update?

I see no widespread usage of this feature if it's just to send to a car only.

Here's why Apple's iOS in the car looks interesting

It turns the car's radio unit into an extended display for the iOS device and the software it's running that people are much more likely to keep updated vs what they'd do for upkeep on a nav system in their car.

Well and Good

IOS 7 Car is all well and good, but it's still going to require you to run out and spend a pile of money for a new car. Personally, and this is my opinion, Google would be well served to make sure this feature still works for Stand Alone GPS.

Not necessarily...

My guess is that manufacturers like Kenwood, Pioneer, etc. will have aftermarket systems with capabilities to make use of the iOS in the Car technology... so one probably won't "have to" buy a new car...

I need to clarify

This is the list New Google Maps is talking about when it said "send to car". As you can see it list "Garmin Device" and "GPS Device". So for us that don't have a GPS in our car it will still send to "Device"

Audi
BMW
Garmin Device
GPS device
Infiniti
Kia UVO
MINI
Mercedes-Benz
Nissan
Toyota

Here is the link if you want to read it.

No Chrome?

It is interesting that under Garmin device they don't show their own Chrome browser.
From the support link:
"One of the following browsers:
On a Windows PC
Internet Explorer version 6.0+
Firefox 1.5+
On a Mac
Firefox 2.0+
Safari 2.0+"

Yep that crossed my mind also.

Wonder if there may a way to send to: A GPX file or similar ..perhaps a another type file?

You need to change back to Classic Maps to do this. There is no Send option in the new Google Maps yet.

I wish / hope

They could use the way Harley-Davidson Ride Planner does things. Right now I use New Google Maps to plan my trips to find locations, restaurants, etc. Then I go to H-D Ride program to cut and paste the locations from Google Maps to my H-D Ride trip. Then I am able to download all my destination points that could be around 15 to 30 points at once to my Garmin with one click. It also lets you save different trips so you can adjust them if you go back to the same place, but want have different points. The funny thing is - is the maps uses Google Maps as it's engine.

Chrome works

I registered my device in Chrome. You just have to use the Classic Google Map "send" and check the box like the directions tells you. It works in Chrome as this is what I have.

...

I can enter an address in a navigation device a lot faster than I can find the address in google maps, click through send to, login to a garmin account, connect the navigation device, send the information from computer to device, wait for the navigation unit to disconnect, unplug it, and put it back where it was.
