My real intention, and perhaps I asked the wrong question, was that I would like to have maps of rivers (when canoeing) and parks. I am going down the James River next weekend with a friend and my daughter and would like to know where we are. The map that comes with it will work ok, but not in great detail.

yes you can have topo. after you upload the garmin/user topo map choose high level of detail. if it is in NA, disable build in CityNav, and select newly uploaded map from the setup menu (under map info)
