Going To CES 2014

I plan on going to CES 2014 (like I do every year). Last year I gave a fairly extensive review on the newer 3597 model. I'm curious to see if there is going to be another replacement this year. So far, nothing posted on Garmin's site. I think they usually announce new products a few days before so I'm looking forward to seeing if there is an updated model. Eventhough I liked the 3597, I didn't feel it was enough for me to upgrade off of my 3490. I like the active lane guidance and larger screen but it wasn't enought for me to switch. We'll see what happens this year (if anything).

I'm looking forward to it as well. Maybe Garmin will give back some features that they took away from us in the past... razz

+1 for bringing back features.

I want lock screen and mp3 player back.

CES

I am hoping that we get back the detailed maps we once used to have......

3790LMT was the last of the high map screen detail units

I agree.

That is one of the reasons I'm still so pleased with my 3790LMT because it was the last of the high map screen detail units. A huge difference to how much detail was removed when the 3490 came out the following year.

3790 vs 3597

I have a 3597. The maps on it appears to have great details.

Anybody knows the comparison of the map details on the 3597 vs the 3790?

What I would Like From Garmin

If I had a chance to talk to Garmin, I would want to ask them to give us a Traffic Signal Monitor Option for the Dashboard, of my NUVI2555LMT. We know they won't change it to work the way they say in the manual, so it will stay Green.

Other than that, I don't have high enough expectations from them.

Garmin's feature merry-go-round or "Garmin Dartboard" is getting really tiresome. I actually dread when the time comes for me to have to purchase a new GPS unit...what features will be lost *this time* when I "upgrade"? We always lose *something*. Just when you get used to a feature or a certain way the unit works, it's pulled out from under our feet or changed in a way that leaves me scratching my head & asking why. Sure, something "new" may be added but it's mostly just something that was previously taken away from us in past models.

I've talked with Garmin many times at the booth and even sent detailed emails explaining bugs and missing features with no reply. When I went back the following year to inquire, they said, "Oh yeah, we got it. That was a very detailed and well thought out email! We were quite impressed" and I'm like, AND???? Nobody followed up on it. The lead project manager for the Nuvi asked me to send that email and still nothing. That company is run like s*%t!

They only hear what they want to hear. End-users are apparently a bunch of half-wits who have no clue about anything. Garmin's behavior in this respect reminds me of alot of Apple. rolleyes

I can agree with you there. What day are you going to the show? I'm going for the final day (Friday the 10th). I've learned to skip the first two days since they are a zoo. I find the last day is the easiest to move around the floor.

Garmin upgrades

I wish they would go back like my 660 used to do. On the Interstate the would give distance to the next exit anything over 10 miles away would be in 5 mile increments and under 10 miles away in 1 mile increments. Also it was smart enough to know that a rest area was ahead instead of stating a road ahead. Every new model takes away more features from the previous versions, their statement is that the processor cannot handle the amount of information available. When I place my 750 next to my 1450 the 1450 shuts down due to high temperature. Why would an electronic company place their product that sits on the dash in a black case? Their older products were in silver cases that reflect heat, not adsorb it.

I would be happy to pay more for a unit which gives me all the information that I would need to assist in the drive, but like in the government, they decide what we need and do not allow us to choose.

I hope they come out with a

I hope they come out with a 10 inch screen. Old eyes.

Not much

Doesn't seem like they went all out this year with new products. One bigger screen and a unit with a BU camera. I'm going to the show this week to have a look but nothing that shows much of a jump compared to the previous two years.

Will be keeping an eye on developments in this space. Would need to see very attractive price point to make a switch though.

2798 ...

So, I take it that the 2798 is essentially the top of the line of the 2014 Prestige series, or is it too early to tell?

I like the back up camera

I wonder how difficult it would be to self-install.

Camera

I went to CES last Friday and looked at the new unit with the BU camera and found the quality to be a bit washed out and grainy. Actually, most BU cameras aren't the best quality yet but hopefully in time they will get better.

YES! I want mp3 capability too

dannyt wrote:

I rarely played mp3 songs on my Garmin, but I prefer using .mp3 files for announcing the addon POI files I get off of poifactory. The mp3 files are smaller in size, do not require conversion to .wav, nor does it require sox.exe. YES, I want Garmin to bring back mp3!! I also wish that Garmin would offer "recalculating" as an option. My 3590 does not say "recalculating" any more. It merely redraws another route. My wife likes the "recalculating" (or user configed phrase), so she knows when she made a booboo. Me, I can live without it.

Unless you are the lead sled dog, the view never changes. I is retard... every day is Saturday! I still use the Garmin 3590 LMT even tho I upgraded to the Garmin 61 LMT. Bigger screen is not always better in my opinion.

Low Cost Map Updates...

I wish Garmin would offer low cost map updates. I understand why they don't. If you offer your "Life Time" map update @ ($89.99) several dollars $$$ above the cost of a new "30LM" unit @ ($72.00), then, in most cases, the customer will buy the new unit in place of the update... thus selling more units, etc., etc., etc.
