Garmin 1490 Issue – Generating Phantom Favorites as Numbers (1.23…..)

I don’t know if this started to happen after I connected my Garmin to check for updates about 2 months back. Before I had about 8 favorites and now I have about 50 new favorites I did not create.
All have numbers like (-1.23, 2.34 and even 2013-09-16T14:53:31Z)
I ask Garmin Support and they told me to load the latest map and the phantom favorites will go away. Well, I load the latest maps and the phantom favorites are still around. I just want to know if there is a way to delete them (not 1 by 1). Does the other GPS from Tomtom etc. has this issue. I may need to jump ship if I can’t solve this issue. Help….. Thanks SL>

Here's a start

Welcome

Before getting too deeply into a problem posted by someone new to the site (in your case a "favorites" problem), we usually recommend the following.

There is a Getting Started button in the upper right of this page right under POI Files. It is worthwhile visiting this page.

To make navigation easy, most browsers provide the following option. When you want to follow a link - but still keep your current page open - you can hold down the "Ctrl" key as you left-click on a link. That action will open a new "Tab" in your browser up on the "Tab" bar. When you then left-click on that new "Tab", you will follow the link - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

So, using the "Getting Started" link, you might try the "Ctrl" - left-click sequence and then return here. You can return by either "X-ing" out of the "Getting Started" page (using the "X" on the "Tab" itself) or just left-clicking on the "Tab" for the page you are on right now.

Since you are new here, I encourage you to go through a couple of the Beginner Education FAQs.

The first link makes sure the settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

The next link helps you make a backup of your GPS by attaching it to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

Now, I am going to make a guess that you have some .gpx files on your device that are duplicating existing favorites and the device is adding them for you but giving them new "names".

To check this out, do a "search" on your device when it is attached to your computer and look for ".gpx" (without the quotes). If you have been adding these files, you may already know where they are - but it is always best to search for ".gpx" because the unit will find them wherever they are.

Assuming you have done a complete BACKUP of your device (please do one), then you would delete these files and then do a Master reset to clear out the favorites that are stored in internal memory and written out each power on to a file called cuttent.gpx.

Master resets are described Here .

Since you have a BACKUP of the device, you can edit one of the .gpx file using EPE to get only the favorites you want and then = renaming the file to temp.gpx, put the file back on the device.

When that happpend to ours ...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but when that started happening to our 14xx, it was terminal. Deleting the favorites and a master reset only worked for a day or two. We had to replace the unit. The good news is our 2595 is a far superior unit.
