Right direction-correct time-wrong distance.

I ricently took a trip from Ohio to Long Island NY I used both GPS on the trip the Garmin C550 and the Garmin 1450, both Garmin told me it would take me 8 hours to get there, mileage 423, before I start the trip I reset the mileage counter on my car to zero. when I arrive the time was a little off and that is understandable cause of traffic plus I need to cross 2 bridges on my way there, I took the direction that both of my GPS told me to do and they both match, but my big concern is that my trip was not 423 miles ,but 493 miles instead. That"s a different of 70 miles more ,how this can be? and why as Garmin not correct the problem? I also did a search on Google map and also come up with 493 miles and not 423 like the Gps did. Does anyone who have a different Gps brand as ancounter the same problem?

Distance to destination.

Where did you see the distance of 423? If it was on a search list or favorites list, it is displayed before the route is calculated and represents the strait line distance to the destination. When you select "Go", the nuvi will calculate the route using roads, and after the calculation, the distance shown will be the actual driving distance using roads. The driving distance will be greater than the strait line distance.

Poor or Lost signal issue?

This problem can occur when your GPS receiver looses satellite signal due to bridges, tunnels heavy tree cover or even tall buildings. When the receiver re acquires a fix, it assumes you travelled in a straight line from the point the signal was lost, not the actual route you traversed.

Discrepancies can also occur when the unit is turned off during a pit stop or overnight hotel stay and then back on when you resume your trip.

I've had this issue with my Dezl 760 and Nuvi 1490 which agree with each other but not always with other sources. In my case, the problem is compounded by the tinted windshield in one of my vehicles which partially blocks the satellite signal. For some reason, the "Lost Satellite Reception" warning does not always appear. You can also miss the audible warning if you have the receiver muted.

It's hard to believe this would cause the 70 mile discrepancy you encountered though.

70 miles?

70 miles extra out of 490? Absolutely. That's only about 14%. What the GPS shows is a straight line distance until you hit Go and it calculates the actual route. Then all the turns and winding roads are taken into account.

more specific locations

If you are willing to be (much) more specific in your starting point and destination we could look into particular possibilities.

If you prefer not to give out specific addresses or coordinates, a nearby major intersection should help a lot compared to "Ohio" and "Long Island".

Did you actually change the display on the nuvi's to show
Distance to Destination?
