Looking to replace my 5+ year old Nuvi 360

Hi

My Nuvi 360 still works, but find it a bit slow, running out of memory for the latest map updates.

Seems like there are lots of options out there and prices have certainly come down since I paid $500 for my current unit.

I was thinking of getting one with lifetime maps and traffic like the Garmin 2595LMT.

Is the traffic feature worth it? What are the pros and cons?

I only use the GPS on road trips from Canada to the US.

We are planning a trip to Washington DC this December and have heard traffic is a nightmare there. However, I plan on staying across the river and taking public transportation into the major attractions.

Thanks,

Dan

I bought a Nuvi 350 about

I bought a Nuvi 350 about that time for $350. It's still working pretty well & has an mp3 player which you can no longer get built in to a nav unit. Also bought a 1350 for my better half & that's still working too. Very reliable units

Will be interested in the recommendations.

Fred

Traffic

In my opinion, Traffic is one of the GPS features that is always iffy in its effectiveness. Given that, it's still useful if it saves you from a traffic problem even 10% of the time.

I wouldn't pay a lot more to get Traffic on a GPS purchase right now, but many new or recently-discontinued GPS models are available now at good prices and may of these have traffic.

I guess my thought is that I'd prefer a device with traffic rather than without traffic as long as it didn't add significantly to the purchase price.

In an event, the other features on the newer models (speed limits, Lane Assist, Junction View, 5" display, etc.) will be a real treat compared to your 360. Have fun.

I can't comment on the 2595LMT but I've stuck with my nuvi 360 for years mainly because I use it as my car MP3 player. The latest Canada+US maps barely fit in the unit's internal memory. I freed up space by deleting the original maps and sample MP3 songs that came with the unit. I also deleted voice files for languages I don't need. The other option is to put the new maps on an SD card.

Thanks for your comments

Yes definitely speed limits, voice activation and the 5" screen would be nice. Starting to feel my old eyes can't see the 3.5" screen on the Nuvi 360 so well anymore smile

Did a bit more research yesterday and discovered the 2595LMT I found on sale at Best Buy and Costco actually came out in 2011 and had some terrible reviews when it came out. Can't find too many recent negative reviews so either Garmin fixed the problems or people aren't buying them anymore.

I think I'm going to go with the 2595LMT or the 2597LMT if they go on sale again and use my iPhone with Google maps as a back up for traffic.
